If I was you I would go with the M or SM with a 281 block I have been to alot of pulls and Yes there have been some 300s 400s and such that win pulls but they are a little on the heavy side for the power. I know there will be people that disagree but thats what opinions are for. JON

I pull a 400 now. If you only go to the 1st gear only "stock" pulls, you won't need to spend alot of money for more HP because of the 30 something % speed reduction with your TA.

I watched a 450 pull in the classic open last saturday night. Pulled the 7500 class in fourth gear. It would dyno 108 hp. Wouldn't say what the engine work cost.I'm guessing it was several thousand. Our pulling went to a money sport. It's pretty simple the more the horses the bigger the check

Not as much money as ya think,,,, in reply to r4etired, 09-16-2004 18:12:23
100 hp, 2500 dollars. any questions? A few years ago, not many machine shops knew how to build engines for this type of performance, and yes, it would cost thousands of dollars because of no knowledge until the machinist sat down and built one. now days, bout every one has built one and the costs are dropping. Most expencive part in the engine is the stroker crank. usually to have a crank built is starting at $800 and get more $$$ as the stroke gets bigger. I learned this when I built my big cubic inch Farmall H engine, built it at the time when no one knew what to do,, and yep paid out the nose, at the time, now days, bout 1000 dollars cheaper than the first time around. 100 hp, 2500 dollars, for an M-450. Not bad HP for a budget. ChadS

Naa,, talking about some of the costs involved in a stroker. To be honest, the 450 would be the best choice over lets say an M, the 450 has all the better parts when they upgraded HP as the series progressed. A good properly built 281 will make 70-75 hp if you spend the money in the right places, and it dont take alot of $$ to get it there. Also, aint no such thing as a stock "pulling tractor" anymore,, somewhere down the line, something has been done to em, If i had my choice to do it over again, I would have built a 300 or a 350. OK Chad. All of us (readers) give you your choice to do it over again. How about you build a 300 or 350 and do a Forum Docudrama with tons of pictures and explanations? I for one whould love to read and dream about your projects as I have always appreciated your postings and comments. My nickel Dick Davis
