460 utility , The fast hitch seems to labor up or down and is hard to control and the power steering is hard and jumpy . Have changed the fluid and filter twice and it gets no better . When run for any length of time the lines, and valve block under the steering wheel get so hot it will burn ya if ya touch it . Any Ideas ??

Aces has you pointed in the right direction. It is most likely you have a blocked orifice plug and orifice plug screen. The heating you are experiencing is from hydraulic oil being forced through the relief valve.

As for the power steering? Can't explain that--this is a separate circuit with its own pump. However, if you do find that foreign material has blocked the hydraulic system's orifice plug and screen, then foreign material may have found its way into the PS pump. If this has happened, then it could be that crud is fouling the PS circuit, too. There is the possibility that the PS gunk (if any) may be screwing up the PS pump's relief. The PS relief is integral with the PS pump I believe. You will have to access the PS pump to do this obviously. This is very easy to do.

TGIN the heat is caused by what is known as hig pressure, that is the pump is always under load. One cause is that the valve spool is not turned just right for single or double acting hydraulics. The spool has a roll pin through it and a clip on the out side of the valve end cover the pin could be broke the spool a has wrench flats so you can turn it, this would be on the two remote valves. If you find that ok, then it could be in the relief valve body. This system has an unload valve to unload the system after you move the hitch or use the remote valves an unload valve will most likely fail in the loaded mode. There is an orifice in the valve and a piston and ball valve as well as the relief valve. If the orifice is pluged, or if the piston oring, or the piston or, the ball valve is bad, any one of these can cause high pressure. This valve is the one with 4 (3/8) cap screws that hold on a 3/8 plate about 2" x3". Be careful cause the relief spring is a tuff one and the plate can come off with some force.

Working on mine at the moment, mainly because I have to replace the axle bearings -- Going to fix anything I find wrong while I have it apart (if I can get it apart -- can't get the trans cover off my 460U, 46 years of rust). Never worked on one before, so can't specifically answer your question. But, sounds like a relief valve, or something else plugged or stuck.
