Hi, I have a 986 that is having starting troubles. When i bought the tractor (750 hrs.ago) it started pretty well unless it was hot,now its hard to get started at all and I,m guessing its time for the dreaded injector pump but before I spend the money I thought I would check timing and here are my 2 questions. First my I T manual says to remove the cover on right side of bellhousing and line up pointer with timing mark, when I removed this cover there is only a rough cut casting hole with no pointer that I can find so where else can I set the time? This is an 1981 model if that matters since they were putting some 88 series stuff in them. My second question is will will the tractor run at all with the pump 180 out? The pump was replaced about 1000 hrs before i bought it so just wondering. thaks Terry

Terry don't know about the 86's but the 66's had the pointer under the cover plate a seperate plate maybe some one lost it.

I have 3 1466's and the problem will probably be the pump head. This head cost about $275.00 to replace and it is a job for the diesel shop. I have had 2 of the 14's do the same thing. It is not your pump if it runs once you get it cranked. These tractors will not run a lick if the pump is 180 out. I have worked on many of these. I think the 986 has the same engine as a 1486 just turboed and intercooling is added on the 14.

Terry,

Can I just throw a couple of nickels in the pot?

I think you are wasting your time foolin' with the timing..... that diesel timing is not going to change any significant amount over time like it would on an old gasser with points.

If the tractor runs A-OK after it starts, I would be for looking into that starting system. Cables, batteries and/or starter. That old heifer has to spin what? 275 revs per minute to pop off? It has really got to spin.

If, on the other hand, the tractor isn't running right then this 'could' possibly indicate injectors and/or pump troubles. But if your pump has only 1000 hours on it, doubt if this is the culprit either.

Just my view,

Allan

Hi, It spins great no problems there, runs great after it starts and has plenty of power, just getting it started is only trouble. Italked to a reputable pump shop here and they said that the distibutor head is bad in the pump, said this is normal to the bosch, first its hard to start warm then cold, but I thought the same thing about only haveing 1000 hrs on this pump. The pump shop said the rebuild on this pump may have not been a complete 1 and this head problem may have been starting at the time of rebuild but was still in specs, just wanting to try everything else before i spend $700, thanks Terry

Ouch!

Sounds like you have already pretty well covered the bases.

That darned Bosch is a pretty beefy pump and its a shame that someone only did half a job on it.

I hope you get the old gal going soon,

Allan

Terry,

On my 9, there was a huge pointer at the harmonic balancer. All I can tell ya.
