I have a small leak and think it is coming from the front seal. It drips about every 5 seconds and hits the front tires. I have bought the seal and cover gasket. Went out to the barn and looked at what it is going to take. Looked major to me with my mechanical skills. I guess the front end has to come off to gain clearance for the pulley to slide out and the cover looks to be behind the governor also. Am I thinking right? or is there an easier way. The leak just bothers me, the tractor runs good.

The hard part is pulling the pulley off. Early pulleys have a setscrew but later ones are just pressed on. In either case, you need a good, heavy puller. You need to use a big bearing splitter behind ther pulley of you will braek a chunk of the flange off. There is a threaded hole in the end of the crankshaft. Run a bolt into the bottom of that hole so you can push without damaging the threads.

You use a threaded rod in the crankshaft hole with a nut to pull the pulley back on. It goes easier if you heat the pulley in an oven before installing it. While the pulley is off, you pull the front cover, replace the seal then reinstall the cover but leave it loose until the pulley is back on. After the pulley is back on, let the seal center itself on the pulley then tighten the cover.

Yes....unfortunately! in reply to William Moore, 09-15-2004 12:09:22

That whole front bolster has to be removed as shown in this poor picture. Remove hood and grill, and set them aside. take off the radiator. There are two nuts under that pull it off . My hoses were in need of replacement so I just cut them off. I blocked up the clutch housing, and hung the engine from the rafters just for safety. Unbolt that one bolt that holds the steering shaft to its holder up by the steering wheel. Lay that whole assembly off to the side.

If the bolster isn't full of 40 years of crud you'll see 4 bolts that hold it on. Remove them, but first get a way to support that bolster. I used a boom hoist of the bac of my ford tractor, but an engine hoist, or a second come-along from the rafters would probaly work. Slide it all away and you'll have a the cover.

Take Care
Steve

Thanks for the reply and picture. That's the way I figured. A lot of work for a simple seal. Luckily everything is clean, so that should help some.
