Does someone here know (roughly) how to translate the amount of fuel in the tank based on inches on a dipstick? I am interested in the factor for an H, a BN and a Cub.

Dividing the height by the gallon capacity will give only an approximate result. At lower tank levels, you will have more than the stick says remaining, and at higher levels, the emty space will not be as much as the stick says. If you want accuracy, the only thing to do is empty the tank and then add gasoline a gallon, or 1/2 gallon at a time and record the level each time and mark a stick as you go. Due to the odd shape of the tank, doing an accurate calculation would be quite complicated.

I have an old stick that reads the gallons in the old F series but nothing on the letter series.

On the stick for my H, the first 5 gallons makes 3 3/8". The second five makes it to 6 1/2". Your mileage may vary.

I guess you could always empty the tank out first, then add gas one gallon at a time, measureing as you go.....just a thought.

Or, you could take the tank capacity in gallons, and divide it by the total inches of depth. That should get you an accurate ratio also.....ANOTHER thought. :)

That will not work. The volume changes as you change height. For that to work the tank would have to be the same cross sectional area for the entire debth. No Farmall tank I know of is. They all slope down at the back.

All you really care about is when you are about empty. Just run it dry and and drop you stick in. Then you will know how much you have left. I just use a plain stick. The empty level is basically the bottom of the tank on everything I have. I just use the stick to verify when I am about empty.

If you want gallon marks, then the idea of marking it as you fill it will work nicely.

I find that if I stand up, I can remove the gas cap and look inside the tank. If the sloshing around shows the bottom of the tank, it is time to finish up that round and get more gas.
