what is a torque amplifier, where is it and how does it work? on a international 300 utlitily

A TA is a gear reduction device that is between the engine clutch and the tansmission. With the TA in the forward position you basically have direct drive between engine and trans. With the lever in the rear position (low side of the TA) the gear reduction is activated which reduce travel speed by about 30% or so.

The main purpose of a TA is to get you throug a tough spot doing some sort of pulling (plowing, disking, pulling a hill ect.) or to reduce ground speed (baling, chopping ect) without having to change gears.

(DO NOT HAVE THE TA IN THE BACK OR LOW SIDE IF YOU ARE GOING DOWN HILL OR TRY AND USE IT TO SLOW DOWN THE TRACTOR. THE TRACTOR WILL FREE WHEEL AND COULD DAMAGE THE TA)

I too always wondered what these mysterious references to "torque amplifiers" were. Now I know. ;)

If they're between the clutch and the trans, then they must be a big cast iron "segment" of the body?

Since I've never heard them talked about in the context of a B, I'm guessing they didn't make such an accessory for B's?

Hi,

No, they are a planetary gear set & additional clutch assembly, which is housed inside a cast iron body segment of the tractor and this segment lives between the engine and the rear end housing. Kind of a big heavy duty spacer gizmo.

When they work as designed, they are the best thing since sliced bread.
