I found a 51484 DX PTO shaft guard with clamp for my Farmall H (With origional paint) on the shelf . Does anybody know the exact purpose for this pto shaft guard. To me, it seems that it is one of those items that you would take off and leave on the shelf. Are they worth anything? Thanks!

Thanks guys for replying but I am not talking about the main pto shield. I want to find out about the one that goes around the PTO shaft. It looks something like a ring compressor sleeve that you would put a piston with rings in it to compress the rings so you could then tap a piston in.

Hi John, I know exactly what your talking about I bought one on ebay for $4.00 this spring and put it on my SM I took off the big one for weight purposes at a pull.I am sure to the right person it might be worth up to $30.00 or at least I have seen the origanels go for up to that on ebay. JON

John:

The shield has 2 purposes. The first was to cover the stub PTO shaft coming out of the tractor so things such as ropes, pant legs, etc would not get caught in it while the PTO was in gear. The second purpose was to secure the shields that were covering the PTO shafts of the implements that you attached to the tractor. These shields were made of metal and covered the shafts on the implements. There was a latch and spring arrangement that went into the slot on the the tractor shield. It was really a Rube Goldberg affair, but was the standard for safety until the PTO shafts with the plastic shields came along. I'd leave it on the tractor for two reasons. The first being that it does cover the stub shaft and will keep feet and other things out of harms way. The second being that old guys like myself know that was the way the H's, M's and other tractors were equipped.

They must be worth something. I have seen them on eBay, I believe OEM makes new ones. I think the guys that want to fix their tractor to look original like them. I wish I had one for my B, but being 17, in school, and no job doesn't allow room for playing with the B.
