I think I already know the answer to this but thought I'd run it past you experts.
My Super M's been getting hard to start. I run the tractor about 10-15 hours a year mostly to bushhog. Last year after taking a lunch break we came back and the tractor didn't want to start, it had to crank and crank. Fortunately the 6v battery had plenty of power. After 3 tries with maybe 1 minute total cranking it fired up and worked fine all day. The next morning it started fine.
This year it'll start hard if you've either just shut down or if it's sat for less than about 8 hours. If its totally cold it starts pretty easy.
The plan is to replace the points, condensor, plugs, wires, cap and rotor since none have been done in about 15 years. The plugs right now are d23 champions which I'm told aren't made any more and that we should go with d21 champion. I was thinking about going with NGK plugs (I don't remember the cross, A6 maybe?) as I use them in my chainsaws, snowmobiles and lawnmower and they work great. Has anybody tried NGK in a Farmall?

My 400 will take a spell of not wanting to start. If you look at carb, it will be dripping. Wait a few seconds, crank it over & it starts right up.

sounds as though you need to adjust the lash on your valves.

You might want to also check the valve tappet settings.

Hi Ludwig, When the tractor does start after several attempts, does it smoke or appear to have been flooded? If it does the float valve in the carburetor may be leaking fuel into the cylinders
causing a flooded condition. A weak coil or condenser may work fine until the engine is warmed up, then cause hard starting until the engine cools off, like overnight.

Cars that had carburetors in the mid 70's had this problem too. Instead of using
brass for the floats they started using a composite material that when it got soaked with gasoline it would sink. The car would usually start ok in the morning when cold and after driving a few miles and then after making a stop, the engine was hard to start. I replaced 3 floats
on diferent cars and this cured the problem.

I think IH used brass floats after they quit using cork, even brass floats can get pin holes. Hal

Ludwig:
Replacing the parts which you listed is a good idea. I always use D21 Champions in my H set to .025 gap ,and they work great! I tried the NGK match about 2 yrs ago in a tractor that I had and they didn't work worth a hoot, although i'm sure some people like them fine. Good luck!
Jeff
