I'VE GOT A 300/350 FARMALL (DON'T ASK)
THAT IS STUCK IN 5TH GEAR. THE TRANSMISSION IS IN THE NEUTRAL POSITION, BUT IS IN 5TH GEAR. IF I TRY TO PUT IT INTO ANY OTHER GEAR IT LOCKS UP AND KILLS THE ENGINE. SEEMS TO ME BY THAT IT IS LOCKING THEN INTO TWO GEARS. TORQUE STILL WORKS FOR 5TH GEAR. CAN I FIX IT WITHOUT SPLITTING THE TRACTOR?

OK guys, I can’t resist any more. You are right with the worn shifter, but there can be more to this problem. There are balls and springs riding the shift rails that do the “detent” when you shift and are supposed to stop and hold the shift rail when not being moved by the lever. These could be getting weak. Combine that with a quick shift from 4th to say reverse, and round the corner in a hurry in a “U” shaped pattern and the 4th-5th shift rail will scoot right on through nutral and into 5th if the gears line up. If building up the ball on the shifter doesn’t work, when you shift pull the lever straight back to neutral, then stop, move the lever to the left, stop, and then into the next gear. Exaggerate each move until you can get the cover off and replace the springs and balls.

My two cents. By the way, I used to get my B, M, and 560 all in two gears a lot until I replaced the balls and springs…

I'm working off an old memory here -- I recall my father with a problem like this on a 300. His solution was to get the shift lever back in the gear it had been in. Then you could move things again. It would seem that you might have to take any strain off the gears from the rear end.

Greg,

I'm thinkin' that you can lift the shift lever off, reach in there and align that neutral gate and then drop the shifter back on.

If I'm wrong, someone please correct?

Allan

Your 350 is probably stuck between 2 gears. Unbolt the shift tower at the base (should be 3 bolts) lift the shifter assembly out. Look down into the hole and you will be looking at the top of the 3 shifting forks. Each one will have a notch cut out of them that the bottom of the gear shift slides into to move the gears. These forks will move forward, center, and back. Take a big screwdriver and move the forks so that the notches are all in the center, this will put your tractor in neutral. Be sure to have the parking brake locked when you do this so the tractor dosen't roll away. Once the forks are lined up, replace the shifter. Use a little sillicone gasket to seal up the base of the shifter. My old 450 used to do the same thing once in a while. Could be the "ball" on the bottom of your shifter is getting worn. A good welder can build it up and the grind it back to size.

Your right Allan. Greg when you have the shifter out build up the tip of the shifter by welding on it and reshaping it so it does not pop out again.
