Would two identical part numbers that differ only by R1 and R2 be two different parts ?

i used to work for an old IH dealer and the R1 or R91 was the first part made, R2 and up are newer versions of the part, that is all.

The parts are usually downward compatilble, that is an R2 part will fit a machine that originally had an R1 part. Not sure that all R1 parts will work on a machine that uses R2 parts, but some should. These would have to be used, not new, since one R2 comes out, R1 is no longer made. Same with the D, DA, DB, suffixes, etc.

What is the significance of the common IH suffix

"R91" or "R92"?

R91 vs. R92 is the same difference as R1 vs. R2. The difference is that an R91 is typically an assembly whereas R1 is a piece part.

The parts numbering system is explained in detail in Guy Fay's Data Book.
