I have owned a 544 International gas tractor for several years. When I first bought it, the starter was very hard to turn over. I replaced the starter, and still have the same problem. I have to energize the starting circuit about 20 times before it kicks in an turns the motor over.

What am I doing wrong? My tractor and my second car share a battery. I do this so it stays charged. Do I need more cranking amps to turn over my tractor engine.

Before I engerize the starting circuit, I have good lights. After engerizing the starter and it not turning the engine over, the lights are non functional. It is not until I finially get the starter to turn over till I get lights again.

Anyone with similar experences and/or recomendations on solving the problem?

I have checked the battery connections and everting is fine. Also this battery starts my second car up every time (well turns over the starting motor) so I believe it is fully charged. I am wondering if since my tractor has a 11 to 1 compresson ratio if I need more cranking amps to drive my starting motor (my car is only like 8.5 to 1).

Do tractors require a special battery?

I encountered the same problem and it turned out to be a faulty solonoid on the starter, changed it and everything was as new...Mike in Exeter Ontario

I'd check the battery cables, both positive and negative for corrosion, looseness and proper size.

I agree. If they're damaged or too small, you might not be getting a connection suitable for the high current requirements of a starter.

Here's a story for you. ;)

I have a 1980 pickup truck for use around the farm, and when the battery died, I jumped it with a spare battery and "heavy duty" cables...it wouldn't even turn the engine. My mechanic friend suggested I install the battery properly, which I was skeptical about, but decided to try. Sure enough, it worked fine.

I still can't believe the pointy teeth of the cables gripping soft lead weren't enough to do anything more than power the dome light.

A lot of times an old dead battery is shorted internally and a dead short to the system. I'm talking mainly about a battery that is really dead and not just down on charge. In that case you won't be able to jump it til you disconnect the old battery and get a direct hook-up to the vehicle. You can still do this with cables if you own good cables.
