On Farmall H tractors, I've seen two different types of seats. One which has a large cone spring mounted under the seat and another style which has a rectangular/oval tool box underneath with a much smaller spring. What year did the conversion take place.
thanks

We had 2 Hs with the smaller spring mounted on the front of the pivot arm. If you want a real thrill let the bolt that holds that spring break, and as you are going down the end of the bolt and X shaped hold down are going up past your nose.

Good luck. I have a 44 A with the large coil spring & shock type seat. I have never seen another A with this type seat. The ol' girl has been in the family since new and everyone says the seat was on her when new.

I have two 42 H"s and both types of IH seats. These were 4 serial numbers apart too! One had the small PTO and one had the large, one had shock seat, one had pipe seat, one had a baffled fuel tank the other didn"t!

I have a '39 H that has a seat that is different from yhe two that you have. When I got the tractor I did'nt think it was the right seat, but, according to the FARMALL LETTER SERIES TRACTORS book it was used only the first few months of production.

I think they used these on M's as well. The '50 M my dad just bought has the huge spring and a shock, but the farm also had a '46 H with the other type of seat with the small spring.

There is probably a date when the newer seat came out, but I doubt if anyone knows it--Parts book lists both, but no serial number break. Actually the seat with the big spring was an option, and was available along with the older style seat. There is another seat made by Monroe that has a large shock behind the spring, rather than a small one under the seat. I believe this one was available before the IH seat.
