Electrical Mess - HELP!

Alright... What a mess!! I own a 1962 International 404 tractor with the c135 4 cylinder gas engine. I cant seem to get the thing to run properly. It misses all the time and when you advance the throttle it wants to die so I have to play with the throttle to get it to rev up. No matter what the RPM is it misses and has little power.

When I first got it I thought it was minor as the resistor block was corroded very bad and I thought I could simply replace it. Well, I tried that! No luck. I need to try and get this thing fixed and need some assistance.

DOes anyone have a wiring diagram for a 404 International that has been converted to 12V? It appears it has a IH (delco remy 1100409) generator that says it is a 12V generator. The tractor also has a voltage regulator, resistor and a 6V coil?? Points and condensor look new and I am begining to believe the reason why I got this thing free was that the previous owner could not get it working.

I know that it could be something besides the electrical system but I have to make sure that it is working first and the only way I know to do that is to rewire it and do the electrical system muself again. While I am at it I will switch to electronic ignition.

I am really tempted to take some pics and record a sound file of how it is working and post them here. Any thoughts? Can someone send me the wiring diagram for a 12 V conversion that does NOT use the stupid resistor rather an internal resistor in a Delco Remy 10-SI alternator?

HELP!

Phil

First I would do a compression check to eliminate a valve or piston problem, next ajust the carb, at idle, the idle screw should be set for max rpm and smoothness, the high speed screw the same, with the govenor open.

Because it misses all over, and is some what eratic. I personally think it is your distributor cap. Maybe wet or cracked. I would replace it.

I believe the 404 was originally 12 volt, could be wrong. Such tractors did use a resistor and a 6 volt coil along with a 12 volt generator. Points, plugs, plug wires, coil and condensor -- Any and all may need to be replaced -- and be sure the 1342 firing order is wired correctly, and that it is timed properly. You could have a loose distributer shaft. You could also have burned valves or valves not adjusted properly. A burned valve will sound like, and is, a miss. Otherwise you have a fuel problem. There is nothing wrong with a 6 volt coil and resistor, probably thousands of OEM tractors, and as many conversions in existance. I have one.

I would return any tractor I got for free if it did not run like a top.

Phil, you cant look at a condensor and tell if it is good or bad.I have got bad ones right of the box,IH too.If your are refering to the 12v to 6v resistor ahead of the coil you have to have it or points and condensor won't last long ,it might be a coincidence but I found the coil will get very hot when the condensor is bad. I'm not to sure your problem is not in the carb, Good luck
