Did I mention I hate magnetos.Ive never been fond of them,I guess since 1976,June I beleive it was.Dad took one off of an A,dont recall why, maybe he was changing it to a distributor i dont know but i was playing with it and got quite a jolting shock from it.Anyways,I hate magnetos.Been working on mine today, bought a new coil,70 bucks at dealer,or stealer, new points condensor, cap plugs, and wires, total about 125 bucks.took apart old greasy grimy mag and cleaned everything up at work in parts vats,(please dont tell my boss, that was suppose to be sold yesterday.(company closing))installed the points and condensor, put in the new coil, put the caps on and connected the coil wire.Put on my workbench and spun it over slowly with the impact wrench and impulse is working fine.Got spark when I pull wire from cap and put near body of mag.Had good spark from each wire to body of mag,a nice big fat blue spark about a half inch away.Thought to myself, great its good now.Cmae home and put on my M after triple checking my timing.FINALLY,Im ready to try it out.NOTHING!ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!No spark nowhere.Pulled back off and took up to shop and tried again with the impact wrench.Good spark again!Put back on tractor and no spark.Didi I mention I really hate magnetos.Thought it may be in the switch I borrowed off of my brothers tractor,so i disconnected the wire, still no spark. The mag is now sitting in my shop in the vise after bench testing gaain and getting a good spark once again. What gives, anybody have a clue?

You don't hate magnetos near as much as I do or you would never have bothered to work on it. I know there are many magneto fans on this site but to each his own. I guess I inherited my dislike for magnetos from my Dad as I have 5 or 6 magnetos he pulled off over the years and replaced them with distribitors.

Well come on lets get them out of that dusty storage site I am getting very bored with all this rain and need something to do. Also to the others that posted this topic. I have lived on a hill all of my life so a mag comes in pretty handy when you have a dead or no battery at all I dont crank I just roll it. JON

Heres an update! in reply to John M, 09-10-2004 14:39:59
It helps when you start from scratch.I had another old leftover mag that I was told some 10 years ago wasnt any good,it had been converted to work as a distributor like the mag on my M had been, and it was just sitting there so I said what the heck start over.took everything from the first mag,all new stuff and put in this other mag.Installed on tractor, and got a few loud pops from the muffler and Im here to tell ya,under my steel building its loud!Anyways I checked the plug wires first and like the big idiot I can be, I had them on wrong. No 1 is suppose to be above the 1 in the circle on the cap,I put it below the 1,where 3 is suppose to be,so I corrected that and now it purrs like a kitten. What I dont understand is why the original mag wouldnt work except on the bench.Oh well, chalk it up to another mystery. Thanks guys!

PS I still hate mags!

Tell you what -- When you absolutely, positively need that tractor immediately, and you push the starter button, and the battery is dead, you can get out the crank and be on your way. (Actually you can do that with a battery ignition too, as long as there is some charge left)

That is the only reason I wanted to fix this one!Two problems though, the crankshaft pin is all boogered up and the shaft for the hand crank is bent.Off to the junkyard for that peice. The crankshaft pin will have to ground down and knocked out, good project for this winter.

How slow can an impact wrench run? Are you sure the impulse coupling is working? Turn it up by hand or on the tractor try to observe the spark as the impulse coupling trips. It actually sounds like a short but you say you've removed the switch wire and it works on the bench. You say you've verified timing 3 times and I assume you are checking for spark right at the mag coil output.

Take switch wire off and it may have fire.

My God I got a good Laugh out of that one Did I mention that I love Mags. H4 to be exact.I take it this came off the M you are working on . Ok If you spin this by hand set it on the bench with the LH side looking at the dist cap lying on the table take the coil wire out of the dist cap and hold it about 1/4 " away the screw on the side and trip the impulse by hand CW trip I hope you should get spark If you hook it up to the tractor and there is no wire hooked to the screw on the side you should have spark. IF YOU DONT I would say one of the wires that hook to the condenser is shorted and when you hook it up to the tractor its grounding it almost like if you pushed in on the switch If this is the case You need to check the wires at the condenser two of them and the one at the points . I dont know for sure if that would happen but it might and check it. I would have made you a deal on parts or a rebuilt mag You Nice people just have to ask. JON
