I removed a rear wheel on my 460 to replace a leaking seal. I can move the rear axle up and down 1/8? inch (hard to measure). How much play should the outer axle bearing have -- none?--or is a little play ok? Mine seems excessive, almost loose, but at $60-70 a bearing, it gets expensive if I replace the inner and outer on both axles. The movement is play between the ball and race.

What kind of bearing are you getting for 60-70 bucks? I just had my M apart lately & a new bearing was $125 at NAPA, that was for one with 15 balls in it, I priced one at an IH dealer but it was only an 11 ball, I may not have needed one that strong with 15 balls, but it back to original spec's

The bearing is gone. You need at least the outer bearing. No vertical movement should be detected.

That's sort of what I thought. When I did my C, I removed the bearing, the balls seemed loose. Looked at a new bearing at the local bearing place, it was loose too, so I used the old ones. I would think there would be a little play even with a new one, but mine is pretty loose.

modern ball bearings are made with a built in radial (interference) pre-load. If the bearing is loose radially it will be destroyed in short order with the load it sees. The outer axle bearing is rather heavily loaded. The inner bearing may be OK. Somewhere around $100 sounds about right for the outer. The inner is a smaller bearing. I would avoid a chinese bearing but Japanese or American suppliers are fine.

Going to pull the axle housing off today. My parts book shows an inner ball bearing, but recommends replacing it with a roller bearing -- may have been part of the 460/560 upgrade -- don't know yet which mine has, or which one I'm going to get. So I get it out, how do I tell if it has too much wear?--I expect it to be worn some, will I be able to tell by axle movement as with the outer?

I have rear from SM on blocks in shed with wheels removed. Can not feel in loose motion at all in either side.

Thank you. Going to replace both bearings on one side then check the other one.
