Why am I having so much trouble buying an oil seal

I would appreciate any assistance I can get regarding my problem. I have a 1961 240 tractor with a blown oil seal in the hydraulic pump. I ordered a new seal using the part number in my IH parts manual. (353-183-R91) The vendor cross-referenced the seal to a new part number (385-038-R91). My problem is that the seal I received has an outside diameter of 1-1/8". The original seal has an OD of 1". The parts department I'm working with cannot seem to resolve this. The tractor has a Cessna pump in it. Looks just like the Thompson pump. And according to my parts book, all pump styles take the same seal. I've been fighting this issue for almost 2 months now and am getting a little frustrated. Can anyone out there shine any light into this black hole I've got myself into?

Thanks,

Rick.

Thanks to all who responded to my delemma. This 240 is my first tractor and I"ve had it for less than 2 years.(and I"m having a great time with it) It seems that there are simple solutions to all the issues I"ve had with this thing. I really appreciate the time all of you spend on this forum helping us rookies.

Thanks all!

I vote for NAPA. I needed an oil seal for a planter drive gear and could not find cross a reference number for it on the Chicago Rawhide web site. I took it to NAPA, they called Atlanta to get a current part number and had it for me the next day. Turned out the current part number is a Navistar part number.

Rick,
When you go to the 240 book, it only lists Pesco or Thompson pumps. If you go to the 140 book, there is a listing for a Cessna pump with a seal #381001R91 the changes to 596548R91 which changes to H89540 which is a good number in the CaseIH system. I don't know for sure what size that is but I suspect that is the seal you need. (no guarantees) Check with your dealer to see if he has one or can get it for you. Don

They can resolve it, they just aren't working on it. Return the seal, it is obviously the wrong part. Go to a bearing supplier as suggested.

You can purchase a seal from your local bearing and seal store or Napa by just giving them the ID and OD dimensions.
