Gas Cap Question

My dad and I went to a tractor show a couple of weeks ago and as we browsed by the Farmall tractor section we noticed something: There were two different types of gas caps. Tall ones and short ones. They both looked to be made the same, except for the fact that the tall ones were about twice as tall as the short ones. Does anyone what the difference is?

I sent IH serial numbers for 6 of my farmalls and had caps in a few weeks. I considered the leaking gas just a pain but got serious when I heard of a local fella who died while plowing his snow with his 560. He heard a hissing sound, opened the cap, and the presurised vapours from the tank caught fire. He inhaled some of the flames and it seared his lungs. Which is cheaper, caps or law-suits?

The tall gas caps were around long before the new safety caps came out. I have 2 that are identical to the short cap both top and bottom but are about 3 times as tall. We allays used the tall caps to prevent fuel sloshing out vent hole on rough ground with near full tank.

Maybe it's just Me, but I think it's kinda BOLD for people to expect International Harvester to send out FREE gas caps for 30, 40, heck even 60 & 70 year old equipment when IH hasn't even Built a piece of AG equip. in soon be 20 yrs. If You want a gas cap I bet Your dealer has one on the parts shelf. We all complain about the fact IHC isn't around anymore.... and We wonder why!?!? If it was a truck gas cap then Yes....

They (or the company they bought) made big bucks on these machines over the years. Some people got hurt due to a defect. The caps I see on sites don't seem to have the anti-slosh or two vent feature.

It's no skin of their noses. The money is set aside, the caps are made. Might as well get one.

Besides, mine has a tired gasket.

Not to be rude but I didn't see one statement in Your post that is/was true. International Harvester became Navistar and is now known as International Truck & Engine Co., Still the same old company dating back to the 1860's. IH sold off the ag div. to Tennaco(1984), and many other operating groups like SOLAR (to CAT, 1982) Construction Equip. (to Dresser1983) Cub Cadet (to MTD 1981). "They" didn't "BUY" anyone, They sold everything except truck & Engines OFF to stay solvent & payoff debt. The cap IH used since the 20's was an Industry standard, and as the Standard changed so did IH's spec's. There NEVER was anything done to the cap to prevent sloshing of gasoline. The changes were similar to a radiator cap, quarter turn to relieve pressure and another quarter turn to remove. Only One person got hurt, and I won't give details of the situation given to Me by an IHC person (a Co-Worker from when I worked at FARMALL) who testified at the trial. There Is no "Money set aside", it comes straight off the operating income from International, and the caps are produced by a local supplier (to Me)about every three months. If Your cap leaks the local C/NH/IH dealer has them for about a Buck or two, or You could just fill Your tank half full like I do. And Yes, I do have a "New Cap", from about 1986 or so, and to be honest, it didn't fit worth a darn and leaked before I reworked it so it was like the OEM cap it replaced!

The old type tall caps have a baffle about half way up this made it harder for fuel to reach vent hole in top of cap. At least it worked for us. NDS

Actually the tall caps are refered to as Triple Baffle caps as I stated down below in another post. It makes it more of a difficult non-direct path for gas to splash out the vent in the cap but does nothing to stop the gas sloshing around in the tank.

All IH tractors that do not have the new gas caps, may get one free of charge from Navistar. They still have the replacement program, but the last time I talked to them, they said they are hoping to phase the program out.

Each tractor you have is entitled to a new gas cap. If you want one, but do not know how to get one, then click the Cub Manual Link below.

Then, click the Navistar Free Gas Cap Offer Form link. You can then fill it out and mail it in. Just costs ya a stamp. After anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 or 4 months depending on when they reach the amount of request that they ship at, you will get your free gas cap via USPS usually.

Hope this helps

The tall ones are vented safety caps. They are being distributed through Navistar to replace the others due to lawsuits involving fires / explosions related to venting problems with the old style caps.

I thought it had to be something like that. The tractors that had them did not seem to follow any pattern either by year or model number or anything.

Short caps = Single Baffle Caps
Tall caps = Triple Baffle caps.
The caps that are involved in the gas cap safety program are triple baffle with a safety catch that allows the cap to partially loosen and relieve pressure before the cap is able to be removed from the tank. The triple baffle cap was factory fitted since about '50 or '51. Company that makes the new caps is located here in the Milw. area.
