I went out and got myself a Hitachi #14231 alternator as per the post by BIG JOHN 11/03. The alternator fits in very nice on my M. I connected it up as per his instructions and I get no charge. I'm thinking I have a bad alternator right out of the box. It was a rebuilt unit though it looked new. I connected up the from the S spade to the bat post and from the bat post to the 12V pos side of the battery as per BIG JOHN's instructions. I started up my tractor and got no charge. I reved it up figuring I might need some revs to get it started and nothing. Can I be forgeting something? Thanks.

I have run into this before on some but not all of them. You will need to put a resistor connected to the L terminal to excite the alternator. That should do it.

GOOD LUCK

you may not need the S terminal at all. connect the excitation wire (12 volt) to the L terminal and see if it starts to charge. the L wire should have a shut off like key or toggles to stop the 12 volt signal when motor is off.
