I would like to know the value of a 1466 with Mechanical Front Wheel Drive. Tractor is very average condition nothing special. Would like to know if MFD was an option or is an after market add on?

yes it was available as a factory option. The front end was built by Coleman. I have one on a 1066. Hugh is right about the mfd helping you turn when dueled up.It doesn't turn sharp and has problems with wheel hop on real hard pulls but I still like it alot.Don't know how to post a pic but can email one if anybody wants to see it. Yep, that 1466 4wd that I used to run liked to do that, especially pulling a heavy duty 12' disk uphill, she'd throw globs of dirt on the hood. His tractor didn't have a differantial lock, so it just spins 1 in the front, and 1 in the back.

Jonboy: I'm trying to imagine how you would ever make a 1466 spin pulling a 12' disk, on tillable soil. I pulled a 20 foot Bush Hog disk with 20" blades, two wheel drive 1066 with duals, and I've never seen it spin.

Pat: I knew there was a factory option, but like you say it was not built by IH. When I ordered my 1066 in 1975 the cost was about $3,500. I went with diff lock and that was a joke. I then went to duals, and man did those duals punish that wide front. I have seen one of those 16" tires drop out of sight in a hole or soft spot, and it didn't stop the tractor, in fact it didn't even slow it down. I was tempted several times to put tires large enough to install a king pin truck type hub on front axle. I think 24" to 28" tires alone even without MFD would have improved the damage factor.

My opinion only way to go once you reach 125 hp is articulated all the way. It didn't need to be the size of a locomotive likw 2+2 either. I had a John Deere 540A forestry skidder, didn't have quite the power of the 1066, but it would pull disk or cultivator a lot more economically than 1066. In 13,000 hours it required no steering or pivot point repairs.

I was told that all 4wd 66 series were aftermarket, and I have yet to see a factory one, but it would make perfect sense that it was an option because after all there was a factory plate over the hole on the transmission for the transfer case to hook up. I worked for a farmer who had a 1466 with an aftermarket 4wd, and the front end was a piece of &*() on that, it took a large field to turn it around because it would not turn very sharp, I put a number of hours on it disking and didn't like it very much, I thought the tractor would actually be worth more with a 2wd front end and duels. I'm drawing a blank on who made that front end, but the later aftermarket kits mostly used on the 86 series were a whole lot better Elenco(sp) made a good one.

darby: It was an option although I'm not sure it was built by IH. It should have been on all 1066 and 1466. There just isn't enough rubber on the rear to put all that horsepower on the ground. If you put duals on them, it beats the conventional wide front to bits. Under heavy load duals want to make tractor go straight ahead, the MFD will eliminate that problem. I think there may have been other aftermarket MFD that could be fitted to that tractor.

That was the experience I had with a new two wheel drive 1066 close to 30 years ago. Bough it single, went to duals, then beat the crap out of brakes and wide front turning with heavy loads.

I have since operated big tractors like that with duals and front drive, what a difference it makes.

Nope, there never was a "factory" MFD unit for any of the larger IHs. It was built by the "Ellwood" corporation, I believe, and was in fact offered as an option on new tractors (MFD versions are pictured in the owner's manuals I have). Earlier ones took a mile and a half to turn around, later ones on the later 86 and 3088 series tractors turned much shorter.
