International 434 - gearbox problem

I have a problem with a Inter 434 diesel tractor I own. In operation it appears to drop out of gear and comes to a stop, even though the gear and high/low range is still engaged. The tractor has a gear splitter (lever located on the left just under the steering wheel) this is in addition to the normal high low range selector. It appears this is the cause of the problem.
Gear or range selected make no difference to the problem. Some times it works fine and other times it will not. Clutch slippage is not the answer as it has just been rebuilt and the problem existed prior to this rebuild.
Any one had a similar case and is the problem easily fixed? Thanks

Edgar, I would guess that the "gear splitter" you mentioned would be a torque-amplifier. Does this only happen whe the TA is on the low side? I"m guessing that it copuld be the problem, especially since you say that the transmission and range divider are still in gear.

Got the same tractor minus splitter.

Just a hunch has I don't have that problem. Sounds like problem in the shift system. Other tractors with this problem seem to have worn shift detent balls or the socket they drop into are worn. Nothing some brazing rod couldn't fix. The rails on this tractor are all straight and by the manual seem to be not too complicated a job to fix. On most tractors you can work the rails with the shift plate off by poking in a bar and sliding the rail into the gear you want.

Might be easier to see what the problem is with the cover off and an halogen flashlight. Watch for oil overspill out of the shift access hole and don't rev engine too high.
