Help! While putting the engine back into the 606, we got into trouble getting the splines on the transmission shaft to go in. Pulled the engine forward and tried again. Now the splines don't want to seat all the way. Did we break something in the tranny shaft, or could the pilot bearing be scruffed? How do we fix this? The whole project has broken my heart a hundred times. Thanks.

Do any future jobs as Crusader says by hanging the clutch/pressure plate on the trans spline shaft then bring the two units together. Bolt up the pressure plate from underneath after the units are together. This way the only alignment you are looking for is the trans shaft to the flywheel pilot. I've done em both ways and this is by far the easiest and the only way I would do a dual spline shaft (live pto) unit.

Johann: You really haven't answered one very important question that will enable anyone to help you. Does the tractor have Independant PTO? Tractors with IPTO have two sets of splines that much enter almost together. The transmission shaft goes into the clutch disc spline while the PTO shaft goes into spline on presure plate. Most often these shafts need a bit of a turn to line up.

With the older tractors with transmission driven PTO this was quite simple as you engaged PTO and had someone turn shaft until you felt it go in place. With IPTO you must be able to turn PTO as well as devise some way to turn transmission or engine. Like everyone else has said it must slide in easily, so you probably should look for damage by now.

It's been a few years since I have worked on an 06 model. It sounds to me as if you should pull the engine back off from the trans. Give everything a good look over, if it's not bent or damaged, try rolling them back together again. Put the clutch and pressure plate on the trans shaft (there's enough room to bolt the pressure plate up to the flywheel once you have the engine and trans/torque housing together). This time when you push the engine and aft end of the tractor together, put the PTO in gear. As the pilot shaft starts to engage, give it a few turns either on the PTO shaft or the flywheel. This should allow it to go together with out damaging anything. Hope this is of some help, and that I am not steering you off the right course. I haven't done a lot of maintenance on equipment since I joined the military 19 years ago. But this is how we did this when I worked in the garages. Sometimes it a tight squeeze, but you should be able to bolt the cluth and pressure plate up to the flywheel through the open starter mounting hole.

later days mate,
Jim

You never force anything. You could of either been stuck at the tranny input shaft splines or at the pilot bushing/bearing. I don"t know if a 606 has independent PTO but if it does you could have been stuck at the splines at the pressure plate. Any way, I would pull it apart and have a look. Like someone said,it is like sxx ,if it don"t go you can"t force it,you might have to take it out and rub it a little first,or even grease it up good.

oh sh*t I think you better pull it back apart.
Putting a tractor back together is like having sxx with your wife. You can't force it.

OOOOO H, how hard did you push? Did you dammage the clutch plate? You need to use a pilot shaft to get the clutch plate centered.
