Just was wondering your experience with IH dealers. I am in the midddle of my first service need from the local dealer. It is a leaking transmission seal(s) that requires splitting the tractor. Replaced the clutch While apart. Sat outside the shop 2 weeks, worked on for 3, picked it up for 3 returned it with the same issure. It is again outside for a week. At what point do I become angry?

Depending on what kind of parts and service you require. You might want to try one of the independent garages in your area for repairs that you don't do yourself. For parts, have you talked with your local auto parts store or your nearest NAPA Auto Parts Store? When I worked in the garages, we got most of our engine parts, seals, and bearings from the NAPA Store. When I am home on leave, there is an auto parts store in the small town near home. Most of the time I will either stop in or call them to see if they have on hand what I am looking for. It amazes me the stock of parts he has for agriculture applications. (He had a carb kit in stock for a tractor that the nearest dealer was going to have to order), they are also one of the best sources for filters. LOL, Louis told me that they aren't a farm equipment dealer or ag parts supplier, but try to have a small stock of what a lot of the local customers need to keep them going. He also told me that they don't get rich and sometimes don't break even by stocking these parts, but the fact that they keep their customers running and that the customers keep coming back is what counts.

If the dealer promised the tractor back on a specific date, and the tractor was not ready. I would tell him that I was unhappy with the service and that I wouldn't be back.

I do most of the repairs myself. When required I use a local New Holland dealer because of the service. No service - no business.

I"m doing all of my own work on restoring my 46 A, but I have been buying parts from two local dealers. They have both been great in getting the parts I need, but I"m not sure how they would be in doing any repairs. Most people I know do their own repair work becaue it gets down faster.

I have a case/ih dealer 3 miles from me and try not to darken his door, they dont seem to want to deal with you if you arent buying a combine as they sell 400-500 combines a year and dont wnat to fool with the little guy, I drive 10 miles further to the john deere dealer to get the parts i need as they can get parts for almost any model. when they treated me well the first time i asked why they went so far out of thier way for a $100 parts order from a little guy, the parts guy said "we want all the buisness we can get" seed guy is the same way, I feel fourtunate to have found people that give me decent service and make me feel good about spending my money with them regardless of how much. BTW i only have 40 acres

I have found both types for IH. Arnolds Case IH in Saint Cloud is a big dealership and seems to not have much time for me. But is real covenient. I pass by twice a day any way. They have a great selection of parts. Good to go when I know what I want and have the numbers handy.

Timmers in Pease, Mn is the best of the best. Small dealer takes the time to discuse things. Drags the mechanic out to talk to you for a $5 part. Lets you behind the counter to look at the parts blow ups. Call him and he ships the parts if needed. Very very good dealer ship.

Greenberg IH in Nowthen, MN is also very good. Dont get by there much any more but never dissatisfied.

Kelly,couldnt agree with you more, been doing business with Greenberg"s for years. Having bought and sold over 200 IH tractors through the years, I have bought a fair amount of parts from them, even if only $10.00 to $150.00 at a time. A good relationship with a parts man is one of the most valuable things a guy can have going for him when dealing with old iron.

I am sure that if you get a parts manual, and give the parts guy the number, that he will enter it in his computer, and it will be there with the combine parts the next day. Much easier than going in and saying "I need the whatsit that fits on the thing mounted to the transmission or something". Tens of thousands of IH parts, they can't remember everything. I have spent as little as $5 (not very often) to over $200 on an order -- never any problem.

I usually do my own work on my H because I enjoy it, it is a simple tractor to fix, I don't have a good way to get it to the dealer, and it never seems to break down while it is sitting in the shed.

When the parts guys found out that I was actaully using the tractor, they were a lot more helpful. The parts are first rate, although, they still charge an arm and a leg for some stuff.

Best to do your own work if have time. If not you might want to consider some independent shop, if there's one in your area. I imagine the Case-IH service department is not too eager to work on a 50 year old $1500 tractor when they can work on the newer $50-100000 ones and make more money. As far as parts, I hardly ever wait more than 2 days, usually next day service.

Don't get too mad yet. Think about it from the dealership's point of view. This is a busy time of the year, and alot of times, the old tractors that belong to customers that probably don't need them right away just take a backseat to stuff that needs to go, like hay equipment and combines. As for the leaky seals, somthing got overlooked. They shouldn't charge you to fix that. What model tractor is it and which seals are leaking?

It took the local case IH dealer 2 weeks just to get his shipment of fuel filters for my 484 IH. I have been told that the parts departments have really gone to the dogs after new holland bought them out, but I don't know how true that is because I didn't do any buisness with them before they merged.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the responses.

The tractor is a 2504 industrial. This version doesnot have a TA but the transmission has the cavity for it. THe problem is that I have Hytran running out between the engine and the transmission, soaking the clutch. About a gallon every two hours.

I agree with the posts. I can do the work, just need to take the time. There is an independent repair shop up the street from the dealer. And I do understand the little guy thing, understanding that the hobby guy probably should take a back seat.

I haven"t paid a penny, other than time. The reason I bought red is because couldn"t afford green and the dealer is a guy that I know, apparently not enough.
