I have a 50 model M salvage tractor that has the optional disc brakes on it. I was wondering if the disc brake assmblies off of it could be swapped over to a 49 M that came with band brakes. I dont think it would be much trouble but Im not sure. What do yall think? Thanks for the help.

I think yall have talked me outta the brake swap. I think Ill just repair the band brakes. I have a 53 Super H with disc brakes and even after I went thru them they still dont stop very well. I guess thats just the breaks!!! HA!

My experience (several Farmall Supers) is if the brake shaft seals do not leak, and if the brakes are kept adjusted, disk brakes work as well or better than band brakes. However even a slight tranny oil leak thru the shaft seals makes disk brakes go away.

Incidentally and FWIW, I have yet to open a weak disk brake and not discover a leaking seal. The good news is the seal is cheap, and it’s simple to replace the seal without going inside the tranny.

Hey Bob, how are the crops looking in your area? Never see anyone post on agweb.com from NY on crop conditions. We will have close to a bin buster in soybeans and a decent crop in corn. Jeff planted 80 acres of winter wheat and got 65bpa with good test weight.

Hey Red - Wheat was a average or a bit better. Problem was harvesting it with the persistant rains, saturated ground, etc. We never ran more than 2 days in a row without being rained out.

Dry beans don"t look good - couldn"t plant until late and then some of what did get planted got washed away or drowned. Field corn on the other hand is looking pretty good. And the rain hasn"t hurt the Christmas Trees a bit!

Punch below for a few cab shots I got while combining. ...Bob

Retired farm neighbor had a Super M with disc brakes and a regular M with band brakes. I always pulled the Killbros hoppers with the regular M. Disc brakes were terrible on the Super M.

I've had two M's, one with disc brakes, one with bands. The band brakes were the best by a mile. I could lock the bands up if necessary, while the discs were downright scary sometimes. Just my two cents.

You can switch them. The disc brakes are a problem for some people, who don't keep them clean. I have changed several from disc to band for farmers. Never use oil on a disc brake, always clean them and use a silicone lube. Good luck.

Wait until you hear from someone who has used both. I've heard people say they preferred the bands. I've only used the band brakes, so don't know.
