Hello,

This is my first post on your forum. I have been around 60's autos but am a newbie to 60's tractors. I would really appreciate your help in regards to an International B-414 diesel. I've searched the site and found lots of great information but could not find many posts on it's worth.

We recently purchased an old farm that was mainly used for hay. We have the opportunity to purchase the B-414 tractor that the previous owner was using. It comes with an International 1501 loader. I have no clue as to what it would be worth. The old fellow is asking $4000 CDN ($3000 US).

The tractor is in need of some TLC but it's engine was rebuilt by a local diesel shop about 2 years ago. The hour meter(if it works!) reads about 2500 hours. It needs a shot of ether to get going. The rear tire sidewalls are cracked and the pto output shaft seal seems to be bad as the rear of the pto and the inside of the rear wheels are full of grease/oil.

Our plan is to use the tractor as a hobby and not for full-time farming. We need to give an answer very soon. Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks to all for the comments and opinions. We decided to buy the tractor. There were many factors that played a part in the decision, but we're comfortable with the purchase. As a bonus, the owner had a large bucket that he used in the winter time to clear the yard and driveway plus a new set of chains for the tires. And he's including a few hay wagons in the deal.

Once we take posession of the property (and tractor), and we start using it, I'm sure that we'll have more questions for you all.

Hi had a B414D from 1962 till about 1973 and it was a good tractor but glow plugs had to work before it would start in even 90F weather. The glow plugs were only required for the first start of the day. Required a block heater for winter starting. Had about 10,000 hrs on it when we traded it for 454D. PTO seal also leaked a little.
Also had a 1501 loader on a 434D which is newer version of B414D. Was a great loader. There should be plenty of parts in Canada as these were one of the most popular 40HP Diesels in Canada.
Same as 434,444,384 and some industrial versions.

One weakness was brakes required yearly cleaning of roller balls.

In 1962 we paid about $3000 CDN for a new B414D and the loader was about $1000 CDN with hydraulic bucket.

If you plan to use a tractor in the winter, the newer Kubotas start better than any brand. Neighbor has IH and Kubota and he cliams Kubota starts even at -20F without being plugged in or ether.

Good luck

The Kubotas would be nice but priced a bit out of our budget. We would like to keep it under $5000 CDN even if it meant tinkering a little with it.

No local Case/IH dealer. My first tractor would not have to be an IH. Before I purchased this tractor I would find out what tractor dealer(s) and the most popular make in your area. Then I would talk to some of the neighbors and get their opinions. Beside the loader you will need other equipment.

From a local dealer you can get parts, service and advice.

I believe those old B-414 tractors were pretty much junk anyway. I'd let that old clunker go and buy myself a couple of M's for the same money as he's asking. The problems you descibe would cost big bucks to fix and I believe the guy is lying to you if he claims the engine was rebuilt just two years ago if you need a can of either to start it (unless it wouldn't start for him some cold winter day, and he used too much either and shattered the rings in it or what he's calling a rebuild didn't include new rings) Motor jobs are expensive, and so is new rear tires at about $300US each for a tire that size, plus that PTO seal will need replacing, especially if the pto now spins all the time and if you have to hire it done, then thats going to be bucks. By the time you got done you will have enough invested in it to have bought yourself a better newer tractor. What makes it worth anything is the loader, but you need a decent tractor to run the loader with.
Hope this helps,

Machinerylink lists the value at about $3000 USD in premium condition and about $1800 in fair condition. This does not include a loader. They were made through the 60's and are crude in my opinion. Unless you really need a loader and can't pay more it sounds to me like it needs a lot of repairs and your hobby might turn into a nightmare.

Hey thanks for the replies!

Just to clarity... I verified with the diesel shop about the motor job and it was confirmed. It is a reputable shop and he indicated that the motor was disassembled, new pistons, rings, cylinders sleeves, new bearings, oil pump, etc.

Also, the pto does not spin all the time. The owner does not have cleaning very high on his agenda. Is it possible that the grease/oil on the wheels is an accumulation from when the pto is operating equipment?

And finally, I realize that it might not be a "great" tractor, but here in northern Ontario, there is limited selection.... heck, we don't even have an agricultural equipment dealer in our area!

Cool, been there quite often when travelling to SRF and Kap. I'm about as North as you but on QC side. In regards to find dealers, have you tried toward Tri-Town Area? It cant be that far from you?

Good luck

Ditto on the cool thing! The tri-town area is the closest for farm equipment dealers. It's about a 2 hour drive. If we purchase the tractor and equipment, that will probably be my part source.

Another thought I had was maybe the glow plugs aren't working and thats why it needs either to start. With no Case IH dealer around, where do you plan on finding parts for it?. Are you sure the oil on the wheels is from the PTO or are the rear axle seals gone too?. I'd buy the brand of equipment thats closeses to me so I could go and get parts for it the easiest. Don't think for a minute that thats the only tractor around in your area because I don't believe it, and you could find others if you look around alittle, especially if you make a road trip out to a couple of equipment dealers.
