Hi, I have a IH 400 with a serial number of 503 with an S stamped on the plate. I see that the first 400 tractor started with a 501 serial number in 1954. I want to know if the S stamped on the serial plate just stands for serial number. If it does, that makes my tractor the 3rd one built by IH in Canton IL. Does anybody know about this? Thanks Dale M.

I did some research here locally and found an old guy that used to work at the Canton IH plant and still remembers it. He said that my 400 tractor was built in Rock Island IL, but was used at the Canton IH plant along with serveral others as a work tractor. That is why it had the brass tag Canton 7425 on it above the serial number.

Tractors were never made in Canton, Il. The Super W-6s were built in Rock Island, Il, at Farmall Works. Plows and tillage equipment were made in Canton.

S means TA with provision for independent PTO.
