Lost what was left of the lining on the drive band of my LPTO swathing hay last week, there's no adjustment left. I have a few questions about the LPTO, I've never worked on one. Can the drive band be replaced through the back plate without removing the LPTO? Anyone know of a source for a resonably priced band or good used LPTO? Will a LPTO fit out of a 300 Farmall?

Thanks!
Ernie Bob

I have some used bands that I will sell for $50.00. I have replaced the bands by pulling the rear cover off.

While on the subject, why are those bands so expensive? Priced some for an SMTA last year and think they were around 160 then. If you can but a whole clutch pressure plate assembly for $100 there is not near as much to these. Perhaps just not that many used? Anyone ever come up with a way to reline them?

LPTO same for 300 and 400.Look close on 300
PTO and you will see a spacer flange between PTO
and transmission.Remove flange and PTO works on
400.Sometimes flange is hard to get lose, but after
you remove PTO from tractor nothing but friction
holds it on.

I had to have the PTO in one of our 460s rebuilt this summer. The bands were worn out in it as well. New bands were over $200 each so the mechanic that did the work for us found a good pair in a salvage yard. It sure seems to work just fine now.

Ernie Bob: No real problem in removing those PTO units. Just drive the tractor to a place where front wheels are about 3' below rear wheels. Just remove the 4 bolt that hold it in. By doing it this way you need not drain transmission. I used to do this with 300 and 560, in side there are two couplers and a short shaft. Those must be removed if you plan to use tractor while PTO is out.

I had a cover made out of 3/4 plywood, bolt that over the hole and continued to use tractor while PTO was off being rebuilt. To me a tractor that could pull hay wagons may as well be in operation. I'm not so sure 300 and 400 PTOs are different, same piece of plywood with same holes covers the hole, in both 300 and 560.

Also get two bolts about 10 inches long and cut the heads off screw them in the top holes, when you are ready to put the unit back in just slide it on them then put the bottom bolts in then remove the pilot bolts, and put those bolts in. It makes it a whole lot easer.

Jim: I rebuilt the planetary unit on the 300 twice over the years. That clutch pack unit on the 560 was something else. I'll bet it was done 6 times in the 17 years we had the tractor. I guess it just wasn't engineered for 90 hp. It seemed like I had that unit so I could remove or install it in my sleep. I never did rebuild one myself. I always sent them off to the IH dealer. You only get to tinker with these items after you stop farming or at least stop milking cows.

Hugh, I had the one out of the 460 and 400 a few times only to ajust them. The 460 is the old style, I don"t remember having to rebuild either of them. My 756 I have had to bebuild a couple of times. Those 10 inch bolts have a place in the roll around tool box.

Thats a good idea. Thanks.
I just happen to have to do this on my 300. Was wondering about lining up those holes.
Hugh"s Idea about the cover and slopeing it down is going to help too.
I want to get her back together and see if she is going to run before I put the cash into the PTO unit.

A 300"s pto is smaller than a 400"s. I have a complete 400 pto unit if you"re interested. 507-653-4408
