Couple Super C questions:

My "bud" and I bought a '53 Super C yesterday (I also have a '57 230 and he has a '52 Super C). All this Red Iron has 2 pt Fast Hitches. Both of our existing units are 12 volt conversions. The "new" SC is a 6 volt. It charges good though. It will fire up cold on the 2nd rotation of the crank, run great about 10 minutes and then die as if fuel starved (I had this problem with the 230 when I first got it, but cured it). I also noticed that the battery is set up as a negative ground. Will this affect the coil??? I was wondering if the "die out" may partly be a coil that is weak or shorting when hot. My friend is gonna take off the carb and do a job on it this week. Any suggestions would be appreciated on the "starving" or coil issue or the situation where its is set up to run negative ground. thanks BobG in VA (For Stan in VA: You need to come out to Gainesville and see this stuff!!)

When an engine quits, do your detective work to determine what the problem is. All any engine needs is decent compression, strong timed spark, & a burnable fuel mixture. Your engine was running so compression is not a likely cause of the problem.
1. Do you still have spark? Pull the coil wire & have someone operate the starter.
2. If you have spark, why don't you have a burnable fuel mixture?
Is the gas cap vent plugged? How long before the engine will restart?

Hey Bob. I usually pull the choke as it dies to differenciate between the carb and ignition.

The coil has pos and neg terminals. The factory setup is positive gnd, so power to the coil goes in the neg terminal, pos terminal to the points. When the elec system is converted to negative gnd, you usually swap the polarity on the coil as well.

And thanks for the invite, email me directions and I'll see if I can get over to see them or help. Also tell Curt that they are doing a Fall show in Bealeton (Oct 9-10). I was really looking fwd to it till I realized it's the same weekend as a wedding I need to be at, so don't know how much support I can lend them this time.

Guys, thanks for the info. We'll be working on this for a couple of weeks anyway. I'm gonna get another coil just because I'm sure this is the original and probably contributes no matter what. Stan, when it starts to die if you hit the choke it sometimes will fire a couple more times and then go out. After a couple of times like this it won't even pop on the choke. I keep you folks updated and try and get a few pics of all the Red stuff. BobG in VA Stan: I'll email you the directions soon.

Neg ground won't affect the coil, but it will shorten the life of the voltage regulator -- something about different materials in the two sets of points. The starving problem sounds like a weak coil as they typically fail when hot. It could also be a fuel flow problem, but I wouldn't think it would run for 10 minutes.
