560 gas mileage?

I have a 560 gas I built an engine from parts from a salvage yard. The block and innerds are from a 403 combine (263 ci) just like what a 560 is supposed to have but without sleeves. It has funny looking(power crater I think )pistons.
It has a 560 intake manifold and timing cover and an 806 exhaust manifold. A diesel flywheel and starter.
I bought a carburator out of a pile of cores and rebuilt it myself. I picked one without an electric solenoid in the bottom. It ran great and had tons of power, way more than any other 560 I had run ,It would pull a 15 foot disk in 4th gear set deep,No problem there, but it would burn 4 to 5 gallons per hour doing loader work or raking hay.
It would smoke black just a little but not bad,and it would not soot the plugs. Now, I picked up a carb off an "M" and put the venturi in my 560"s carb, the hole in the 560 was close to 1.25 inch and the M was less than an inch, closer to 7/8ths . It still runs wonderful but has alot better throttle response and I don"t have to choke it to re start it when it is warm, with the big bore I always had to give it a choke to go. I havent had a chance to run it to see how much difference it made .
I just wondered what other 560"s get for gas mileage, gals per hour that is. Thanks in advance.

Someone brought up a point. I think you have a 301 in your tractor, as they are basically a 263 without sleeves. I had my suspicions when I started reading your post, but as I read others I really have a hunch. Are there any casting codes on your block? Many will say C-301 on them. I know the 301 in an 856 will put out 90 horses at 6 gals/hour. You're already at 5 gals/hour, which is probably the result of a 560 carb on an 806/856 gas engine, the 301. I think it is a great combination, and I would think the combination M carb with the 301 is an awesome and extremely unique combination. I think you will be very happy with it's performance, and I bet there is enough air draw through the M carb that it really mixes the air and fuel well, and probably a large reason it will start without choke. Good luck, and keep us posted and informed.

I never had a gas 560 but HAD a LP Gas and STILL HAVE a Diesel. The Diesel will do most work like pumping water (8 inch crissifulli pump) on 3-5 quarts "yes quarts" per hour. The 560 LP would pump the same amount of water on 2.5 gallons of LP Gas and in the field would butn 6 gallons and not pull the hat off your head.
I remember a neighbor who had a 806 LP Gas and used it to ditch with 50 to 100 hours per year and was renting the LP Tank from the gas man.Well he did not use the 806 enough for the gas man to leave the tank for him to rent (he could get more rent somewhere else) He said when the 806 is low I will come out and fill it for the cost of the rented tank price of 2 cents per gallon and the cost of the LP. Good deal well his 1066 went down and he used the 806 to pull his landplane and the gas man was out there 2 times a day for a week. Needless to say he brought the tank back and never offered that deal again. Not the subject of 560 gassers but interesting experiences with LP Gassers

well i have a 706 with the 263 engine and that sounds about right. it didn"t matter what i was doing, 4-5 gallons an hour, light work or heavy. one thing i did that helped was start playing with the carb. when i"m doing light work around the house or cutting with the sickle mower or raking i lean it out a bit. at the recommended setting, i would have to stop and fill halfway through the day cutting hay. turn the mixture screw in one full turn from spec and now i can cut almost 2 days on a tank. tractor still runs cool and the plugs look good. there is a lack of power but cutting hay doesn"t require alot of power.

Hi Chris,

Boy, I dunno.

Seems to me if you are burning 4 to 5 gallons per hour on a gasser, you really did something right.

There is just no getting around the fact that engines of that size are gonna drink if they are fueled with gas.

I think you are right on the money with this one.

Allan

I could"nt get a good measurement on the stroke,But the bore is definately the same as a 263. Thanks guys, now I don"t feel so bad with the 4 to 5 gal per hour. When I put this gas engine together I didn"t plan on doing any heavy work with it,all I wanted was a loader tractor with a gas engine to feed with in the cold months, I would have taken a 4 cylinder if it would have fit. I have a diesel 560 work tractor with 3100 hours showing,it stuck from sitting, and got a kit 30 hours ago . I like it"s economy.

Gas engines don"t get much better "mileage" when operating under light loads than they do under full load - - unlike a Diesel engine. I think 4 gal/hr is probably about right if 5.5 gph is full load usage.

IHC built a 301 CID engine without sleeves for industrial/vehicle applications. That may be what you have. The bore would be larger than a 560"s.

The engine manual states the engine will use between 5.03 and 5.35 gal per hour at rated load speed.
