I am looking for help in adjusting a newly rebuilt carburator for my 1948 farmall. It would run for a while and then, after it is shut off, it would not start again. Now it won't start at all since I adusted some of the set screws. Where is my starting point for each screw and which screw adjusts what?

Like Wildman said: identify the tractor & we can get much more specific with help.
Presuming you have an A, B, C, H, ro M, the screw on the bottom is for high speed. Begin at 3 turns out or so. The screw highest up is most likely the idle mixture and should be 1 1/2 turns out or so. With the engine warm & running at wide open throttle (WOT), turn high speed mixture screw in until the engine begins to starve for fuel. Then turn the screw out until it begins to blubber. Now find the "sweet spot" in between the two settings. If you are working the engine (plowing, etc.), then the high speed screw needs to be turned out 1 turn or more to be sure the engine isn't starving for fuel and can develop it's rated power.

The same proceedure can be followed for idle mixture with the addition of the ldle stop screw to set the low speed RPM.
On the "M" carb, the idle mixture screw is an air adjusting screw so turning in will richen the mixture and out will lean the mixture.
Aren't carbs fun!!

A,B,C does not have an adjustable main jet unless it has a kerosene or distillate engine.
