I'm overhauling my C164 and the parts book shows a part which appears to be a flat narrow metal bar (not sure cuz mine is missing) called a valve tappet stop. What purpose does it serve? It looks like it would limit the upward travel of the tappets. The engine seemed to run fine without it. It is held to the block inside the tappet chamber with two 5/16" screws

If for some reason the rocker arm or pushrod fails that tappet stop bar keeps the lifters from flying up out of their bore and getting in the way of the other lifters and possibly causing one or more of the valves to not close. There's a LOT of clearance between the valves and pistons in those old IH engines so no further damage would occur. Same part should be in an H thru 350.

You call them tappets, I call them lifters. Same thing. I am not sure of the exact purpose of the bar in question. Like you say, the engine will run fine without it. I think I would try to locate one and install it, there must be a reason for it or the engineers would not have put it there in the first place. It should be easy to find one.

I always figured the bar was to keep the lifters in their socket when you pull the push rods. I have lifted a lifter out when removing push rodswhen the oil created a suction .
