Well the manafold gasket was not the problem. :-(
Still runs like crap. I was talking to the mechanic this eve. He is kind of stumped as to what the problem is also.
( That makes me feel a little better)

He said they have a great running 560 there and he is going to park it next to it and start switching parts until he finds the offending part.
Will see. I have no idea other wise it would have been fixed by now.

Did you check out my reply to your earlier post? The symptoms you described sounds just like what I saw when the main carb bowl gasket is flipped and the high speed jet gets blocked.

Is this the right carb by part number for this engine? Also, are the vacuum readings within norms?

I haven"t read all of your posting"s about your tractor, just this one. From what I am reading you have some carb problems. Now take this however you want to,but this is 25 years of tractor mechanic experience talking. If you have a Farmall that doesn"t run right, maybe stumbles when you open the throttle, runs wide open only when the choke is partially closed then what you need to do is get a new carb, not rebuild the old one,not rebuild one you got from your nieghbor or the local tractor salvage, but a brand spanking new carburator from your friendly nieghborhood Case/IH dealer.

New or even rebuilt carbs are not cheap and seldom required. There's generally nothing wrong other than dirt. Course you do need a little carb savvy to know what's god and what ain't what can be cleaned and what cain't.

If thats what it needs thats what it gets.
I already paid $170 for this rebuilt carb thats on it.
He is going to take a carb off a good running 560 and see if that fixes it. If it does then this rebuilts going back. I did ask the IH dealer about a new carb before I got the rebuilt. He just said. " you dont want to go there"

Have you played with the jets while tractor is running? If there is no change when you turn in and out, probably something is plugged in the carb.

Make sure tractor is warmed up good, and I noticed with mine that book settings were only a general.

Just for the heck of it, cover the radiator and let the temp come up to the high side, (not overheat)and see if it makes a difference.

I haven't looked at all of your posts, but some time ago you gave us a veritable shopping list of the stuff you've changed out. At that time everything was changed except the coil. HAVE YOU DONE THIS! Sorry for shouting.

suppose he swaps the entire engine, piece by piece, and it still runs like crap? According to MacKay the lousy running is engineered into the beast.

I have a 460, runs fine, currently doing carb and governor work to fix a fast idle. Has none of Kelly's problems -- Don't agree that the problems are built in. IH sold over 100000 460/560's. All Kelly needs is a good mechanic. I still say it's the carb. Hugh (and others) are simply biased against that series.

I will tell you the reason I dont think its the carb.
Its running the exact same way as it did before the new carb. Even if this carb was bad you would expect the symtoms to be some what different. Not exactly the same. But never know.

Personally I think some thing is amis with the distributor. Maybe a worn bushing or some thing like that.

Remember that the setting for the main jet screw for that carb is 5 turns out -- they are not adjusted like the H/M carb. So it is really a fixed jet that you can turn the screw in on for better economy. I have a Super H that did somewhat like you say, until I read the manual. I really don't think you need a NEW carb, unless the "rebuilt" one sat around for years and rusted. If the holes/ports, etc are shot, then you have had it--but I don't think so. I have heard that some of the jets, etc in the 460 carb are hard to get clean. If you have a "mechanic" (no sarcasm intended) looking at it, he should know what to look for and can easily determine whether or not it is the distributer.

I agree, carb! I have a 560 I built an engine from peices from salvage yards for and I fought a dirty carburator for months. I was sure I did something wrong inside(timing gears) almost to the point of tearing it down again. I finally baked the carb in the oven at 300 degrees for a half hour or so and rotted it out again with oven cleaner and forced air,it ran perfect. I must have been in the carb 6 times before I baked it. I am a little biased towards these tractors.

I soaked mine overnight in carb cleaner, I don't expect any problems, that's a pretty simple carb.
