Glenn: Are you also aware you can have a 6 volt alternator. Just a matter of changing the internal regulator on a GM Delco.

I have 3 tractors with alternators; Super A, 130 and 140. The Super A is 6 volt and has been by far the most sucessful. The Farmalls 130 and 140 are 12 volt. If it were not for the fact that I have an implement with a 12 volt electric motor those two tractors would be 6 volt as well. It is now drawing close to 11 years since I put the new 6 volt alternator and 6 volt battery in the Super A. I live in Canada and have frequent cold weather starts, and that battery is the same battery I put in 11 years ago. I say yes 100% to the alternator idea, they just do a better job charging and the batteries last much longer. By staying with 6 volt you need not worry about changing lights, coil or adding a resistor to it.

By the way, my Farmall 130 was changed to 12 volt alternator 1 month after SA and is on its 3rd battery. I just did the 140 last year. If you want to know more look up 6 volt alternators by Quick Start, or e mail me.

I converted to an alternator on several tractors including my 300U. Not too difficult--especially with the resources and articles on these pages. Bob M is a frequent contributor among others and has helped several of us. We can walk you through changing polarity, voltage, mounting hardware or most other challenges that come up if you still have questions after reading the articles to the left. Good luck.
