I entered my 560 Diesel in an 8500 lb tractor pull last Sunday just to see what it could do. I really didn't know what to expect because this was a first for me and I was intimidated with the larger tractors with larger tires and all the experience these other guys had. I had worn out Goodyear 15.5 X 38 tires with very little tread. Can you believe I WON!!! I beat 2-4010s, a 706 Diesel, a 656, another 560 diesel and a beautiful looking 730 Diesel by 2 inches. I quit.

Way to go, Lance! Isn't that the biggest hoot winning at your first time on a sled? I'll bet you sent some of those fellers home scratching their heads.

I experienced the same situation 2 weeks ago at our local fair. I jousted my W-9 up against several JDs in the 7500# Classic Division and whupped them all using worn tires and one lousy pair of rear wheel weights. The best part of it all was that this all happened with my brother and five buddies watching.

I must admit that one of the tractors the W-9 had to go up against was a gourgeous 730D Wheatland. I had no aspirations of out-pulling this brute as I was spotting it 500# and new rubber, but when the rubber hit the road, the 730 managed to disqualify itself by slinging its clutch cover down the track. Sorry, bud. You lose any hardware and you're out.

As to the tires: I am told that new rubber isn't the end-all in tractor pulls. On hard, dry, dusty tracks, old tires with cracks, checks and flexy sidewalls bite like a deerfly at a cookout. There may be some merit to this statement.

I am retiring, too. Well...MAYBE!

my son pulled my 560 gas in an antique pull last summer, his and the 560s' first time pulling. i was surprised that it weighed 8200, shouldn't have been, i guess. the tires are loaded on it. he ended up 2nd after a hot rod got dq'ed, pulling against some hot rods and a few stock tractors. the 560 has 1 decent firestone and 1 decent brand x and the brand x spun out or he might have done even better. first place wasn't much farther. congratulations on your win.

My 560 weighed about 8000# with fluid in the 15.5s and a wide front with floatation tires. then I put 150#s of weight on each rear wheel and the front weight bracket with one 100# weight and full fuel to get 8465#s. I also drove 45 miles on blacktop road to get to the pull so my tires were pretty sharp when I got to the pull. I wish I had the extra 35#s on the front because I think I would have done just a bit better by keeping the nose down a foot or two longer.

Hey Lance,

Can I ask, are your tires loaded?

Glad ya had a good time; and that's what it is all about.

Allan

They have fluid in the tires which was in there when I bought the tractor. I don't plan the take the fluid out so I could pull in the 7500 class. I plan to only pull in very local pulls where I can drive the tractor to the pull. It did dyno at 62 hp last year and 65 hp at the pull. I made no adjustments to the tractor.

Lance,

I always did think that the 560 had a better weight distribution than the 656, in fact, I always thought that this was kinda the 656's weak point.

I noticed you were up there pretty good as far as your weight class and was just wondering. Sounds like you've got that thing tuned to a fine line.

Good job,

Allan

I looked at where other 560s in the 7500# class placed their front weights and then just put a little more up front to keep the front end on the ground. most of them were steering with their brakes. I think they missjudged the hard track whiched caused their front to come off the ground way too soon and then it lowered their hitch so they lost all their traction. I also had a diesel which weighs a little more up front. My front finally came off the ground at about 285' mark. I stayed in first gear and never had to pull the TA back. The RPMs only came down to about 1600 at the end.

Lance

I don't know why this interests me so much; I'm not a puller at all; just have never had a desire to do it.

But, maybe it was that 730D you nosed out. Those things are really beefy down low in the hind quarters.

Do you remember how much weight you hung on her nose?

Sorry to keep bothering you, it's just nice to hear about an old 560 showing 'er strong character that way.

Allan

I think with a diesel you need to put 150lbs on the front plus what ever the weight bracket weighs. I think the bracket must have weighed about 60 or 70lbs. So I'd guess there was just a tad more than 200lbs total on the front. I would guess a 560 gas would need a little more because the diesel engine weighs a little more than the gas. I think I just guessed lucky. That 730 had a big advantage with his lugging power because when his nose came off the ground he could idle back and the nose would come down. He just chose the wrong side of the track.
