I'm with Wade, (wh), you can easily change an H clutch without splitting the tractor. Pull the belly pan, pump if you have it, undo the driveline yokes, take three bolts out of the clutch and put them throught the plates to hold them together, then remove the other three bolts, turn the clutch sideways and drop it out, replace the reverse process...Mike in Exeter Ontario

They say it is possible,,I have done 4 H clutch replacements in my garage, but I always split them,,I have two chain falls, works great ,,we did one last hay season, me and the guy who was working hay with me,, we split it and put the new clutch in,, we were back in the field in just over 1 1/2 hours,, its a simple job to split it if you are safe how you do it,, all that it has is a few bell housing bolts and a couple linkages,,if you split it dont forget the bolt inside the starter hole,,block both ends really good and you should be fine,,,Jim

Jim,

Your post reminds me of those old Chevy 4X4's when putting in a new clutch.

It was sooooo o much easier to just yank the engine rather than come from the bottom up.

sorry to disapoint you - you will not win the nobel prize for that feat. VERY EASY to remove the clutch/pressure plate from the opening under the tractor. drop your belly pump and go to it. i last one i did i timed myself and was done in 1 hr 45 min (removed and replaced).

Larry,

You younger guys have all the luck.

It would take me an hour and a half just to screw up my courage to tie into that pump. :>)

But, you're right; pretty simple repair.

Allan

Well, now. Just hold on here a minute.

The thing of it is, you'll end up doing yours....I won't. Ha!

I think my pump needs seals 'cause when I pull that stick, I'm getting a little drip from the lower cover.

Okay, I'll plan on pulling the cover off and looking up in there one of these days; maybe it is just a loose street L or something. (But, I know I won't do it for another year or two 'cause I don't use that pump anyway).

Anyhow, I'm very busy leaning on this rear tire & drinkin' coffee. :>)

Allen, my 1940 H with the belly mower developed a drip the other day, actually it was more like a stream of hydraulic oil. My first thought was, gee whiz, here we go, but I got very lucky. The leak was coming from where the pipes thread into the pump way up in there. I screwed all 3 of the pipes out, cleaned the threads, wrapped with teflon tape and put them back in. I have mowed with the tractor twice since then and not a drop of oil has been lost.
