So far my Farmall 12 volt conversion has worked well..my only problem is that now, I have put 4 10 resistors on, and they all burn right out..the guys at the local parts stores look at me like I'm crazy when I ask for this part. How many watts/amps resistor should I be looking at..the only one I found was 1/2 watts (yes, one half watt) any advice..

By the way, the ammeter shows great charging..

HELLO I HAVE 3 OLD IH'S THAT I HAVE SWITCHED OVER 2 GAS AND 1 DEISEL.AS FOR THE RESISTOR SKIP RADIO HUT ,AUTO STORE OF YOUR CHOICE WILL HAVE A CERAMIC BASED UNIT WITH A MOUNTING
BLOCK ON IT .... TELL ME ABOUT THE ONE THAT YOU HAVE THAT WILL NOT SHUT OFF. I RECENTLY DID A DC CASE AND THE ALTERNATOR RUNS IN REVERSE BUT CHARGES BATTERY
AND WILL NOT SHUT OFF WITH THE EXCITE WIRE PLUGGED
IN.BEFORE I ADD A BYPASS SWITCH TO MAKE IT WORK
I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW YOUR RESULTS BYE ON

After reading all this stuff about 12 volt conversion and all the attendent hassles, I just went down to TSC and bought an 8 volt battery.
Fits the original case and posts. I adjusted the third brush on the generator to the max and have had no problems.

As a side note, I don't have any other 6v stuff hooked to this tractor. No lights, or generator or anything. I'll get one of those Universal resistors ltc mentioned. I think the resistors I got at Radio Shack (one half of a volt) must be for little hobby radio circuits or something, not automotive applications. I'll go from here. As I said, it's charging like a champ..the only catch is it doesn't shut off. My next trick is to add some lights.

thanks Gee

How much of the old 6 volt equipment are you running through the resistor? Lights, coil, etc.? You obviously do not have a large enough wattage resistor. A universal voltage dropping resistor is available at 1-800-634-4885 for $4.95. J C Whitney has a 10 and a 20 amp capacity for $19.95.

POWER IS EQUAL TO I SQUARED TIMES THE RESISTANCE VALUE. IF YOU ARE CHARGING 3 AMPS THROUGH A 10 OHM RESISTOR THE POWER WOULD BE 90 WATTS. 3X3 X R. THIS IS JUST AN EXAMPLE. IF YOU KNOW THE CURRENT AND THE RESISTANCE VALUE CALCULATE THE POWER AND USE A RESISTOR WITH AT LEAST TWICE THE POWER CALCULATED. A 1/2 WATT RESISTOR SOUNDS PRETTY SMALL AROUND A CHARGING CIRCUIT.
