I agree that adjusting the clutch is the first step. If that doesn’t correct it then it is possible that the original full-faced fiber clutch has been replaced with a newer “button” clutch which I believe was called a “dyna-life” clutch. This clutch lasts longer, but wears a big groove the size of the buttons in the flywheel and pressure plate. This causes drag on the clutch disc when it is released even when it is properly adjusting making it practically impossible to shift unless the tractor is still moving the same direction that it is in gear. The only solution for this is to split the tractor, take the flywheel to a machine shop and get it cut back flat, get a new pressure plate (or have it reworked by the machine shop) and then put in a new clutch disc. I haven’t tried to buy a full-faced fiber clutch for many years, but would strongly recommend going back to them in the older tractors if at all possible.

Try pulling the TA back if that works you need to get a service manual( if you don"t have one ), then go through the TA adjustments to the letter.

Tom,

Heck, I dunno. I'm a certified dummy. LOL

Let me play devil's advocate here for a minute:

When you are on an incline, you are holding the tractor with the brake, aren't you? Because, as you know, the whole weight of the tractor is "leaning" on that transmission.

If so, the first place I'd look is at the clutch adjustment.

Just tryin' to help,

Allan

Try pulling your T/A back when on a hill. Just make sure your brakes will hold. I think you will find it will shift much easier. HTH JohnG
