Hi, we have an old Farmall 400 diesel sitting out at our farm. My grandpa has owned it for many years and it was used to mow with up until about 4 years ago when the pto went out. The other day I decided to try to pull start it. I hooked up our old Farmall Super M to and tried to pull it but that darn old tractor wouldn't budge an inch. It will move in neutral but not in gear. Could somebody give me some ideas on what might be happening? Thanks Braxton

Hi Braxton, Use that pipe wrench first to see if that engine is free. If it isn't stuck then you could pull start it. You may strip a gear if the engine is stuck. Hal

PS: Try moving the engine in each direction.

Hi Braxton, Is the radiator still full on this
tractor? If it is still full and there has been
a cover over the exhaust pipe I would rule out a hydrostatic lock. You may have to remove the injectors and squirt diesel fuel or transmission
fluid into the cylinders and let it soak for a few days. I would first use the pipe wrench as the one man has suggested. Once you get it broke loose then you can use the starter. Good Luck, Hal

Did it have a rain cap on the muffler, or was the exhaust otherwise covered? If not, the engine is probably stuck, especially if when you pull it in gear and release the clutch, one rear wheel will often times turn backwards. If this is the case, there are a lot of posts archived that offer advice on un-sticking engines.

It could be your torgue amplifier is locked up but not likely if the problem happened while the tractor was sitting idle. If was sitting outside most like likely it is a stuck motor. Try getting on the front of the crankshaft with a pipe wrench and see if you can move it back and forth.

Hi, Does the engine attempt to turn over? It may have a hydostatic lock due to coolant leakage
into the cylinders. I wouldn't pull it anymore until you check the engine to see if you can move it over by hand. The engine may be seized too since it hasn't been run in years. I would check that first. It may turn over hard, but you should
be able to rotate the engine. Good Luck, Hal

I have attempted to start the tractor but the starter won't move it. It tries to turn over but it just can't. The muffler has always been covered. Thanks for all the help. I will look at the other posts that discuss this. Thanks Braxton

I also wanted to ask you what would cause the PTO to go out. Could it be a simple fix? I am only 19 years old and I would like to learn anything I can about these tractors. I would love to fix this thing up and it wouldn't take much I don't think. The body doesn't have any rust or dents anywhere. I would really enjoy fixing it just for the fact that it was my grandpa's faithful sidekick for so many years on the farm. It would somehow be a way to honor him in some way I think. Anyway thanks for all the comments. Braxton

Could be the PTO clutch is out, not a terribly bad problem to fix, but the least of your worries, with a stuck engine.

He said it moves in neutral. Thus eliminating the oft commmon occurence of being locked in two gears.
