Well, this isn"t going to be cheap.

I hit a hole bush hogging and bent the pto shaft on my 1964 IH-140. I didn"t know that I bent it at the time, no vibration that was obvious. When I was disconnecting the pto coupler I saw the seal was bulged on the top side. I manually rotated the pto shaft and there is a slight wobble.

This tractor has both the rear and side output shafts.

What is involved in replacing the rear output shaft? Can it be done by just removing the pto housing or does the whole transfer case have to be removed from the drive train?

What"s your thoughts on replacing the seal and running it? The seal is bulged but not leaking. Again, there was no noticeable noise or vibration.

Any ideas on where to find a rear pto shaft?

Thanks

Seacern: I'm guessing your cheapest option would be buying from a scrapyard or used parts supply. Same shaft fits SA, SC, 100, 200, 130, 230, 140 and 240. They should be a dime a dozen.

Just reomve the complete PTO housing from the transmission case. Once off, remove the bolt that holds the gear on the PTO shaft and then use a puller to pull the gear off, then remove the woodruff key, then the shaft should push out the back. It is just a short stubby shaft and new ones may still be available from CaseIH for a price. Or get one from a salvage yard.

Seacern, You can remove the PTO housing, disassemble and bring that shaft to any good machine shop and they should be able to straighten the shaft. To leave it bent will shorten seal and bearing life.
