Farmall Super A

My son and I found a 1948 Super A for sale yesterday. It appears complete, not stuck, and has good compression. The hood was struck by a fallen tree branch and the water pump started leaking when I hand cranked the engine, but otherwise the tractor is in good condition. The owner is asking $1,000 for it , but I think that might be a little on the high side.

I know the old saying about the value is somewhere between the asking price and what you're willing to part with, but what is a Super A in the above condition going for?

Greg, sounds like a good deal but be very careful. Take a close look at the left side of the engine block just below the head and in front of the carb. Make sure there are no cracks, as these are notorious for cracking all along this side of the block. I found 3 of them this way. Good luck.

Sam: I beg to differ with you on the statement," notorious for cracking." My guess is owners have been notorious in forgetting water freezes in cold weather. I have owned 6 of these tractors in my lifetime, still have 3 of them. Two of my tractors have seen very heavy workload. Until about two years ago I burned about 600 gallons of gas per year in them. I have never had a cracked block. I know of many more of these tractors, that have never had cracked blocks either.

Maybe I mis-spoke, however I have had 3 in a row that were bad, the last one sold to me as a good one by an older gentleman who is supposedly knowledgeable about these. Even he couldn't tell. I'm just judging by my experiences.

Sam: I am not arguing the fact on just how many C-113 and C-123 engines are or have been broken. I should have made that a bit clearer. I know there are lots of broken ones out there, and it is a shame as there is no need of it. I can't believe the number of people who will check the antifreeze in their car or pickup in early Oct. then bingo it hits them about the first week of Jan., "by gosh I should check the SA." I think one of the problems has been buyers loosing interest in their tractor.

Paid 1,000 here in Virginia for a torn down Farmall A,with cultivators.Might be a little steep but hauling was included. It went together fine, and I had alot of help right here on this site(big plus).Biggest expense was new rear tires to get it useable.

I payed $2000 for 1950 SA. Came with belly mower in poor condition and cultivators. Mostly needed new distributor and carb and cleaning up. Sure would like to buy a new grill and hood but the grill is too expensive at the moment. So far, have been able to work out most of the bumps and dings. May get a new hood some day. The water pump must have been added as the SA came from factory with out one. (convection cooling). If you buy it, get a service manual and owners manual, lub and change the oil in the engine, transmission, etc. Lots of people ignore this too long. If you get it, you"ll have fun tinkering with it.

Greg, I would say anywhere from $500 basket case to $3000 for a descent working tractor. I paid $700 for my 49 Super A about 3 years ago and am still working on it. A replacement hood is only about $150, so not too bad. Your motor sounds OK so thats half the battle! Good Luck and get yourself a manual. Its a great little tractor!

Thanks everyone. We are going back with a trailer and tools to check it out (and hopefully make a deal) tomorrow. I'll post some pictures if we come home with it.
