Is there any fuel additive that"ll clean the injectors on a 282 diesel? I recently rebuit the engine after sitting for at least 9 years, it runs fine from 800 rpm and up ,but at idle it surges and runs real rough. Not air leak surges, real short quick surges every revolution of the engine. Sometimes when the engine is warm I can restart it and it"ll run perfect (idle) till I rev it up and then it idles bad again. It just makes me think of some crap floating around in the pump or injectors. I just thought there should be something to pour in it before I start sawpping injectors. I already poured 3 quarts of atf in it a couple weeks ago and it does"nt seem to have helped. The engine only has 45 hours on an overhaul. I don"t have a way to check compression, but it cranks over even on all 6 when starting it. I am pretty sure it is a fuel thing. I changed the filters, twice now. What do you think??

Chris, atf won't clean an injector, it will remove moisture in the system and lube the pump. You need a fuel cleaner for diesels to clean the injectors, I have a diesel that ran as you describe yours and after a few tanks of injector cleaner treated fuel it runs fine..Mike in Exeter Ontario

Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO). Ben out for 40 yrs. For gas and diesel, fuel systems and crankcase. Solvent/oil. Wally world or local auto parts.

Chris,

I don't think it is your injectors. Does the old gal flare a little at wide open throttle?

Kinda sounds like your timing is a touch fast.

Just guessing,

Allan

It burns clean and smooth at full throttle. It will slobber a little at wide open when it is cold, but at running temp is clean and smooth., I"ll check the timing again, but it runs good and starts easy,so I know it is at least close.

But Chris,

With diesels, 1/64" (the width of the injector pump hash mark) will make a world of difference.

But, like you say if it is running straight and true at WOT, then I doubt if this is your problem area.

However, if the timing is set just a hair too fast, she will do a slow "lope" at wide open throttle and you'll usually see a little bit of grey in the exhaust too.

Hope ya get 'er going,

Allan

Chris,

If ATF doesn't clean the injectors, I would go ahead a pull them and check out the spray pattern. Do you know anyone that has a test rig? If so you can test each one for pattern and also set the injector timing at the same time. If any show a poor pattern or "dribbling", you can tear them down and clean the nozzles with the right size wire. Soak them in clean diesel fuel a few days too. I haven't done that particular model but I've done Ford and Perkins injectors and its a fairly easy job. If nothing else you'll eliminate the injectors as being the problem area once and for all.
