Hi I'm new to this board and hope I can find some help. I just bought this 1970 IH444 diesel. Everthing was fine until about an hour ago when something strange happened. I had been driving around in first gear slowly. I stopped to engage the PTO. After I did the tractor would not move at all, but sort of bogged down when I tried to release the clutch. When I put the shifter into what appears to be neutral, the tractor moves in reverse. I can't get it into any other gear. The pto seems to engage and disengage normally.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

The 444 has different shifting linkage than the 544. For the 444, pop out the pin that holds the lever into the top transmission plate, and line up all of the openings in the shifting rails. One will be out of line with the other 2.

I had the same problem in July of 2006(Utah). Reading this post let me know how to approach the problem by removing the shift lever pin, removing the shift lever, and aligning the sliders.

Thanks for the info, it saved a lot of work. Removing the top of this transmission is a nightmare due to some casting being too close to bolts.

It wasn't mentioned that the pin is held in place by a kind of soft plug similar to those in engine water jackets that are against a shoulder. Use a punch about half(or smaller) the diameter of the plugs and keep it centered while driving the pin and opposite plug out. When the pin emerges, it can be pulled out by grasping it with fingers. The pierced plug can be re-flattened, if not completely punched, and re-used(or get new ones). Looking down into the 3 sliders, they appear to each have a square notch. Just line the notches up and reassemble the shifter.

I have a 544 that would do the same thing. my shifter is on the upper right hand side, i have forced the shifter back in whatever gear its stuck in or if your tractor has a plate at your feet,on my tractor this has a battery behind it. you can take it off take the battery out you will see three rods there. you need to pull up or down on the rod that is not even with the other two. this does take a little force to move. but it can be done and works.
