IM IN THE PROCESS OF BUYING A 1949 H. IT HAS DECENT MATCHED TIRES, REBUILT TRANNY, HYDRALICS, BELT PULLEY. IT SMOKES A LITTLE WHEN IT IS STARTED THEN WHEN IT IS WARMED UP THERE IS NO SMOKE. IT HAS ORIGINAL PAINT. IT RUNS GREAT AND THE OWNER PLOWED WITH IT YESTERDAY AND HE SAID IT DID A GREAT JOB PULLING THE PLOW. HE WANTS $1,200 , IS THIS TOO MUCH? I HAVE SEEN PAINTED H'S GO FOR $1,500 ALL DAY. THE OWNER IS STUCK ON $1,200 AND WONT TAKE LESS. SHOULD I SEARCH FOR A CHEAPER ONE, OR BUY THIS ONE? IS $1,200 FAIR?
THANKS

I agree with everyone. A running H with good rubber beats a prettier one that's more unknown anytime. I've learned the hard way to pay a little more for a better runner than to pay less for a not-so-good one or get overcome by a prettier one. A good runner trumps everything.

The initial smoking is from valve stem guides being worn. They give out long before the rings give out. With good rubber, $1,200 is a decent buy. I have picked off Hs and Ms at $500 but the tires are usually shot. Time you put on new rubber, you are right back at $1,200.

I just returned from an auction where there were two Ms in very similar condition to the H you describe. Brought $1,100 and $1,400. You could have gone straight to the field with either of them.

Bub,

I'm certainly no expert; really dumb on these things, actually.

But, if it is straight out of the field and is running strong, I'd sure give him his $1200.

You can always doctor the little bu-bu's later.

That old gal has probably got the original engine and I don't think we can hold against her for puffin' a little blue in the morning.

Allan
