We have a farmall that we thought was a 1947. The serial No. on the left side on a plate has 37856. would this be a different year than we thought? The tractor has been in the family since about 1954 or 1955.

Are you sure you are not missing a # in that serial. how about the Motor serial does that match? Right side above the mag or distributor a small raised block with the #.I Cant remember if its in the front or rear of the motor on a H. JON

Thanks Jon, The # was in front on the motor. It matched the one on the plate. Poor tractor hasn't had this much cleaning on it for a long long time! Hope it'll still run after scrapeing the gunk off it! So I guess this makes it a 1940. Great! I guess I'd better check out the 48 cub and see if that the year for it. Brenda

Brenda,

Looks about like a 1940 model to me.

Thanks Allan, Is there any other way we can be sure what year it is? As you can guess I'm new to all this but I would really like to have more information on this tractor.

Another way to determine the year is by looking at the casting codes, which will appear on virtually every part of the tractor. The code will appear as a three digit number. An example would be 2*16*J The letter J represents the year, in this case 1940. The other two digits will be month and day, respectively. The codes on your tractor will not all be the same, but should be very close. Let us know what the codes are on your tractor.

The Y code makes it a 1953.

Say Brenda,

Got to thinking. Are you absolutely sure it is an H? What is the complete serial # from front to back including the letters?

The serial number you provided shows that it is, indeed, a 1940. You can check the serial numbers in left column of this page. Click "Serial Numbers", then "Farmall", then "H", and it will show the STARTING serial number for each year.

What do you know! We thought our "old" tractor was an 47 H and the "new" one was a 48 cub! Now in the matter of minutes we have a 40 H and 53 Cub. The wonder of the internet! Thanks guys, Brenda
