I am trying to reset the timing on my farmall h.
The shop manual instructs to line up the 2 hash marks on the radiator belt pulley with the pointer
on the engine block and then set the rotor to hit on the #1 point in the distributor.
problem is when the engine was previously overhuled by someone else the crank was removed and replaced without concern of those 2 hash marks.
HOW can I rotate the engine to the #1 firing position without using the hash marks for reference? Can you find the #1 firing position by removing the #1 spark plug and lining it up that way?

I don't think you can mess up the marks because the pulley is kyed on. Find top dead center by rotating the engine by hand untill you feel compression on #1 cylinder. contiue cranking until the piston is at the top, (feel in hole with wire or somthing) Then look for your marks and I bet they line up.
