I HAVE A VEMEER BAILER MAYBE 25 YEARS OLD. WILL BALE MAYBE A 1000 LB BALE. I WAS ROLLING ALONG REAL GOOD THE OTHER DAY WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN I SEEN A TIRE PASS ME UP THE WHEEL AXILE BROKE ABOUT HALF INCH OUT PAST THE REAR BEARING ON THE HUB OF THE BALER THE BEARINGS ARE ALL GOOD IN THE HUB THAT HOLDS THE TIRE ON AND THE REAR BEARING STILL ON THE SHAFT IS GOOD. MY QUESTION IS IF I GOT A PROFESSIONAL WELDER WITH A PORTABLE WELDER
DO YOU THINK IT COULD BE WELDED TO HOLD THE WEIGHT IT HELD BEFORE. NOW QUESTION NO 2 THE BALER IS SITTING IN THE FEILD WITH THE FRAME ON THE GROUND WITHOUT A ROLL IN IT I HAD JUST RELEASED A ROLL SO IT'S EMPTY. I HAVE A 450 IH TRACTOR WITH A FRONT LOADER ON IT OR I CAN PUT THE HAY FORK ON. MY QUESTION IS WOULD IT BE TO MUCH WEIGHT JUST TO LIFT ONE SIDE OF THE BALER UP TO WELD IT IF IT CAN BE WELDED AND WOULD IT BE TO MUCH OF A STRAIN ON THE HYDRAULICS TO TRY SUCH A TASK. THANK YOU ALL (KEN AT ELSBERRY MO)

Put in a new spindle as there are too many potential alignment and strength issues with a weld in the field. As for the loader it should be up to handling the task. Consider using a chain and lifting from above somewhere that way the loader will be out of your way when you replace the spindle. Just my $.02 worth.

Ken, Just my opinion but I can't see what you would have to loose by trying unless you are on the hwy alot with this baler if it doesn't work and breaks again then replace the axle I would hate to spend a lot of money on a 25 year old baler. By the way I live near New London just a couple miles fron hwy 79 and have been working at the lock & dam at Clarksville almost neighbors Brian.

We had the axles break in our 605D Vermeer years ago. The axles are easy to replace. Just blow a puddle weld out on the front and rear of the axle tub and pull it out. Slide a new axle in and puddle weld it back in place. We opted for the heavier axles they put in the later balers. You have to change the hub and rims to 6 bolt though. We eventually broke both axles.

If I understand you right, you sheared off a spindle in the hub. I can't recomend trying to weld a spindle for a lot of reasons but the danger of having it shear again, maybe in a lot worse spot, like going down the road, and the difficulty of getting it straight enough to keep bearings in it would be good reasons to find a spindle for it. The hub casting number and the bloody stub of the old spindle should let you match up a spindle if Vermeer is too proud of their new ones. Good luck. Hope this helps.
