Anyone had any experience with the generator drive pulley on a Super A's fan assembly going bad? Is there a bearing in it or what? Don't have a parts book & manual doesn't show me any pictures of the inside of it. Probably need the whole thing-anyone got one they want to part with? (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

There is no bushing in there, the cast iron fan bearing rotates around the spindle. It's lack of oil that kills them. If you find a boneyard assy. that spins free with no wobble, buy it. Its a much more robust design than the aftermarket (Chinese) units which use two pretty wimpy sealed bearings. See my fix Link

A buddy of mine had a similar experience. The fan hub siezed on his BN halfway thru a parade. The tractor stopped so quick he thought the motor had siezed (and caused in the tractor behind to run into him).

Anyway it wasn't until after he'd dropped the BN's pan did he discover the problem was the fan hub. Turned out the oil reservoir in the hub had been allowed to run dry. The assembly was stuck as as if it had been welded. A new hub assembly (filled to the proper level with oil!) solved the problem.

Jal, The pulleys in the fan assemblies for the A, B, BN, C, SA, SC, were all pretty much the same in that they had a brass bushing that eventually would wear out. Your Case NH dealer can get the pully assy. sans fan, but it will cost well over $100.00. There are numerous places that sell the whole replacement fan assy. for around $60.00, which is cheaper than trying to repair your existing fan assy. Unless you are dead set upon keeping everything pure IH, I would suggest one of these aftermarket fan assy's, as they are true to the original in appearence, and will serve you well functionally. I learned long ago that the main cause of those old fan bearings going out, other than 60 yrs of use, was the belts being tightened too much. The belts don't need to be tightened as they would on a car because you will never turn the R.P.M.s to make them squeel as on a car. Both the main fan belt and the generator belt can be adjusted much looser than for a car or truck.

Thanks for the quick response. Don't care if its pure IH, think I'll try salvage yard, we've got a couple close to me. Otherwise, maybe NAPA? Should have checked, I was just down there getting a fuel pump & carb kit for a '73 IH Scout-they had everything in stock, including a new float. Couldn't believe they had everything that I needed in stock. (Another $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
