Factory spec is 1 7/16 inches from the pedal to transmission cover. Gears will always grind if you don't wait for them to stop turning after you push in the clutch. This can be minimized if they are shifted at idle. There should be only minimal grinding when shifting with the tractor moving, unless you are shifting from 4th to a lower gear. The gears are not syncronized.

You can also slow the spinning gears down a little faster by moving the gear shift lever all the way to the right and then pushing it forward. I'm not sure what is happening in there but it definitely helps a lot.
