IH 474

The 474 is an English built tractor that is very similar to the 574. The 474 uses the Neuss built D206 four cylinder diesel engine. They were rated at approx. 52 pto horsepower and were available in an 8 speed gear drive or a hydrostatic version.
Both versions were sold in Canada but I don't think IH ever sold them in the U.S.They date from about 1974 to 1977.

Now my 2 cents, my brother has a 454, 495 and 684 and the only difference from 474 is engine, rear wheel sizes and heavier 3pt and front end.
The 454 & 495 use a D179 and 684 uses D239 where the 474 uses a D206. These are excellent Diesel engines. Run a long time with very low maintance.
The achilles heel of these tractors is the parking brake. There is an idiot light on the dash to indicate the parking brake is on but to often it is burned out and tractor is driven with parking brake engaged. The parking brake is a band inside the transmission and if it is driven with it engaged it will leave bits of groundup parking brake band inside the transmission. This would not be so bad but the transmission is also lubed and cooled by the hydraulic oil. Eventually these bit of parking brake band will clog the hydraulic system.

Check parking brake for holding while engaged. If it does not hold then it probably has been through the above treatment.

P.S. newer X95 series have flashing amber light on dash for parking brake.
