My server is a local independently owned telephone company and it is not a long distance connection. Yesterday my wife told me she couldn't get on the internet. When I investigated I discovered that on the screen dial up icon , my name had a series of numbers behind it and the server number had been changed to a 1-900 number. My modum gave a busy signal when I tried to connect. I assume this is one of those numbers that they charge you exhorbent amounts per minute if you call it ,or some one has attempted to hyjack the modum and place thousands of long distance phone calls on it. My son cleared the computer and reloaded all the programes and everything seems fine this morning. I do have PC cillan virus screen but someone was able to change the dial up number. I believe I am safer than most people because long distance dial up modums are more vulnerable. If I have said anything that is not so it is only because of my limited ability with a computer. I only post this as a warning and to seek any information any of you can share with me...Mike in Exeter Ontario

It also helps to have your internet firewall turned on and get the Windows security updates on a regular basis.

Our local TV station reported on this just a week or two back. And told us to check our dial ups often to make sure the same thing doesnt happen. I personally have Mcafee on line it costs me between 20.00 and 30.00 a year and it finds all kind of spyware when you do scans about every two weeks. And I have never had a virus infect my PC every time Mcafee has caught it and cleaned or deleted before any damage. Knock On Wood. JON

Download AdAware and Spybot. You might be suprised at what's lurking around in your computer.

Kendall gave you a great idea Michael with Spybot. I downloaded that program and caught 170 some virus"s on my computer! The way I was able to tell that something was wrong was my computer slowed down to a crawl, and once the virus"s were cleaned out, it went back to super fast. ---Jeff

Ok guys, since none of us work for free (doesn't pay the bills), what's the catch to "free download"?

Gotta be something.

For Ad-Aware, there is virtually no catch. It won't monitor continuously, so you have to actually run it to catch anything. You can pay for a version that runs continuously in the background. It is also not legal for use by a business, and you again can purchase a version that you can legally use for your business. Find Ad-Aware at the Lavasoft site linked below.

Txblu: Ad-aware is a great little program. I"ve used it twice in the last two weeks to clean up friend"s computers that were running slowly and giving them wierd errors. The only "catch" is of course they want you to buy the "full" version, but it"s probably worth it to anyone interested in catching all the nasties that people try to put on your computer.

Txblu: I think you"ll be happy with the results. Just as a "sanity check", a reasonably healthy "puter will have an initial "score" (the number of recognized objects found) of 0-200 or so. Of the friends I mentioned, one had 680, and the other one had 850! Most of these are cookies, but both had over 100 various "nasties" such as trackers, dialers, malware, etc. etc. clogging up their systems. The worst one was "buy buddy", which Adaware was unable to remove. It was placed by a visit to JC Penney, and I had to manually remove it by editing the registry (UGH!!). It"s a little dog that pops up in your system tray, tracks your movements, and then directs ad traffic to you based on your surfing habits. Suffice to say that they were getting ads for LOTS of "relationship enhancement devices"..... One quick thing--you can right-click on individual entries in the "found" list to select what to do with them. Some things you may want to leave, but usually you can just delete everything the first trip around and then go from there.

Thanks Tim. Hear you on the tracking your movements. Marketeers think that is great stuff, but I call it an invasion of privacy..... ..privacy, what's that?

Steve from MO is right on! I used to work in the telecommunications billing industry and your phone company will upon your explanation and insistence (and previous record of never calling a 900 number in the past) remove the charges for 900 numbers on your phone bill. They will probably require you to put a block on calling all 900 numbers at the same time. This block is normally free to put on.

Personally, I have gone wireless internet which gives me up to 336k download and 112k upload. I could pay for up to 712k if I wanted. I did this for more speed (as I could only get about 21k on the phone line), to free up my phone for business calls, and to eliminate the possibility of having to deal with fraud calls like you may have had. Other than the cost, I love it!!!

Good luck with your phone company, and don’t be scared to threaten to call your Public Utilities Commission and follow through if necessary to get any 900 calls you did not make off your bill.

Those crooks are sneaky. Call the phone company and try to get the 900-number charges reversed off'n your bill. They might be substantial. Then have them put 900-number blocking on your phone. Most of those 900-number dialer things work in the background so you wouldn't know if you got hit again.

Last winter I got a phone bill with a $300+ call to some place in South Africa on it. Turned out the same thing that's being discussed here happened to me. My phone company knew about the scam and I didn't have to pay the charges. They also put a block on my phone so that it couldn't be used to call foreign countries. I just recently downloaded the spyblocker stuff on the yahoo toolbar(go to yahoo.com to find it) and it cleaned up alot of junk that had already found it's way onto my new computer that's less than a month old.

I have had similar problems and seem to have solved them by downloading and running a couple of programs that will destroy any spyware that is in your computer. I am using the free versions of both so it doesn"t cost anything. Both are very effective, and you need both of them. Do a search for a website called major geeks. The programs you want are called spybot-search and destroy, and the other one is called adaware. I now run both of these programs about once a week, the adaware program usually always finds something that shouldn"t be there.
