I have a IH 300 utility, and like most 300 it is a gas hog. I have a chance to get a carb off of a 350 utility. My question is will this carb use less gas than the original one I have on my 300 now? I could get the #,s off of the tractors and the carbs if that will help with someones answer. Thanks to all that help me with this question.

On light loads try a higher gear and run the engine a little slower. As I recall the utility engines ran at higher RPMs than the Farmall. When you expect full power be ready to put in the fuel. I put a 13 gallon auxilary tank on mine mounted on the front and have used it that way for almost 30 years. The normal tank only holds about 10 gallons.

IF it is the same as the carb on the Super H: The Super H has an adjustable "fixed" main jet. max power is obtained with the screw 5 turns out. You can turn it in for better fuel economy, and leave it just rich enough until it runs smoothly.

CNKS:
The Super H carb #358065 is much different than the #361525 300/350 carb. The biggest difference is the venturi which is #23 in the Super H and #25 in the 300/350.
Although the books indicate they can be interchanged I have never found the to be true in any of my rebuilds.

I said "if" they happened to be the same -- anyway I was referring to the adjustment, as my Super H carb does not work well if I adjust it the same way as the H carb, that is, in until rough, out until smooth. Super H carb is designed for max power if needed, or better fuel economy for light jobs. Question is can the 300 carb be adjusted the same way?

K B: I don't know if the carb is exactly the same, but it certainly will not improve effeiency. 300's were a great old power source but certainly not fuel efficient power. On a 9' haybine my 300 would burn 3 Can. gallons per hour, whereas 560D and 656D would do the same haybine on very close to a Can. gallon per hour. This is precisely why you see so many gas tractors of that era around in very good condition for their age, the diesels that replaced them were fuel efficient and soon took over the workload.

As much as we love to hate them, the 300 was still a good old tractor. In cold weather, it would start when nothing else would. My 300 still holds the record on my farm for having baled the most hay in a day (square bales). It stayed around for 35 years from new. It is still going and on its 6th set of pistons and sleeves. The current owner uses it to do his yard work and like you thinks it hard on gas.

I'm pretty much in agreement with you, Hugh. We had a 300 Utility that wasn't easy on gas, but the thing was nearly indestructible! During the time we had it, we didn't bale hay, we chopped it. That little beast was the "engine that could" on that hay chopper! Since it turned the PTO a bit faster than 540 at full throttle, it made the chopper swallow hay at an incredible rate. There were things about it I didn't like, but it was one tough tractor.

I don't think my 300U is so bad on gas. Remember the gas tank on a 300U isn't very large so maybe it seems like its using a lot of gas because it doesn't hold a lot of gas.

As the other guys said, the 300U and 350U carbs are the same. Have you tried adjusting the one you've got? My experience is that these tractors aren't so bad on fuel if you run with the main jet screw only a turn or so out except when you're doing heavy work and need the extra power.

I don"t know what to tell you..... ....I know I have ran alot of 300"s and I"ll be the first one to say they run very economical IMO. Maybe it is time for a complete rebuild?

The 350 is a larger engine with more horsepower and both engines are of the same years. I'm not a carb expert, but it seems to me that the 350 carb would be jetted larger and would probably use more fuel.
